to compensate for the money i think its better to use an AMD quad core processor which one could get for a hundred bucks or so.
Then we would have to change the motherboard as well...
OR just get i3 and better PSU

Check this rig out: (no os however)

DVD Drive: LITE-ON 24x DVD Burner
Case: Antec VSK-2000 Black
HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 500GB
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3
GPU: POWERCOLOR AX5770 512MB
PSU: Antec TP-550 80+ Bronze
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB (2x 2GB) DDR3 1333
CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 Propus 2.9GHz

Total (without taxes/shipping) $653.92 - $50 in rebates + a free HDMI cable

This doesn't include an OS. Do you need an OS?

if you need the OS it will be over budget. It'll be 700 total after rebates (750 + shipping and taxes before you get the MIR). Heres the link to the OS: Win 7 Home premium 64-bit OEM

I'm putting together a build for $850 for my family, that's Australian dollars, so I'll just check Newegg to see if it's in your price range.

CPU: AMD Phenom II 555 BE (unlock to triple/quad)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H
PSU: Corsair CX-400
GPU: Radeon 5670 (Any Brand, 1GB)
RAM: GeIL 1333 CL9 2x2GB
Case: Lian Li Lancool K56
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB
CPU Cooling: Coolermaster Hyper 212+
Speakers: Logitech X-240 2.1

Yep, comes to $645, damn your american pricing... You could swap out for a better GPU with that amount spare, maybe a 5770, and also get a 550W PSU
