Help! GPU Fan Spinning But No Video Output

Thread Starter
Subject pretty self explanatory - I took out my 9800 GT out of my HP computer to clean the dust and replace thermal paste (I've done this a few times before with no problems at all). Well, I put the video card back in and everything boots up fine, video card fan is spinning, but no video output at all. I tried resetting the CMOS, checked the cables more times than I can count. Can anyone help?

This has happened to me before. Plug in the power from the psu. That fixes it for me.

Edit: I see you have done this already, sorry.

have you tried reseating the vid card/ removing and reinstalling? I would also make sure your power connection is firmly in place.

Do you get a post beep?

No post beep, I have tried pushing in the power to the card a few times, but it's worth another shot. I haven't reseated it again, just the one time (and yeah I've taken it out and put it back in a few times, but I haven't reseated it a second time).

Sometimes the card does not function correctly if the screws are tightened too much. Try to unscrew your heatsink and un-assemble, then re-assemble with a reasonable amount of tightening of the screws. I had this problem way back with my GTX 260...unfortunatly I needed to RMA that card as it turned out to be faulty...

edit:
I sold my GTX 480 and the buyer had this problem and discovered his heatsink was tightnet too much. It worked after a re-assembly.

Alright, I'll try reseating it again. I did have a few of the screws pretty firmly tightened, so maybe that is the culprit.

If your not getting a post beep and you normally do I would say either your motherboard or PSU is acting up.

Have you tried the onboard video?

In my experience this sounds like the way a motherboard dies, I would carefully disassemble the rig and reassemble it on some cardboard to see if it boots there.

Is your PSU modular? I once used the wrong end of a 6 pin PCI-E connector (the side that goes into the PSU) and it didn't work.

I don't normally get a post beep, it's an OEM machine. I haven't tried onboard video yet, but it is a pretty bad PSU (obviously). And no my PSU is not modular. I just tried reseating the card, with the screws snugly (not firmly) in place, and it's still the same thing. I'm going to try onboard video, brb.

Ok, I tried onboard video and it's not working. This leads me to believe it's the PSU or motherboard..I don't really have another PSU to hook up atm, is there a way to test if it's the motherboard (without taking it out)?
