switching from intel to amd - Page 2

You can not use DDR2 athlon does no support DDR2 yet. Good choice for the mobo. if its just for gaming i would highly recommend stickign with a single core opteron rather than spending extra 50 bucks and buy urself a good "HSF"

OFF TOPIC: and i highly agree with u Battlestar galactica sucks!!!!! been waiting for that damn show to come out and when i finally saw it... goodlord it wasnt was i expected waste of time....

HSF = heatsink and fan (cpu cooler).
AMD sockets 754, 940 and 939 do not support DDR2 ram (only DDR).
The upcoming AMD socket F (due in June/July 06) will support DDR2 800 ram, and maybe DDR2 667 OR ELSE.

Never heard of that ram.
First find a motherboard your gonna go with, then check the manufacturers website for varios ram compatabilities, (or ask us).
Some very good ram brands don't work on all motherboards.
Stick to the proven names in the buisness.

Very good choice for a motherboard, especially if you want to overclock.
For overclocking: Get "G.Skill PC4400 or PC4800" DDR (not DDR2, DDR3).
"Crucial Ballistics" is also some good ram.

I thought I'd throw my thoughts into this thread.

Seeing as you will have to replace your RAM if you go with and Athlon X2 setup then I would advise going with a Pentium D (2.8GHz) instead.

Reasons;
  1. The Pentium D 9** series is much better than the older 8** series as it has twice the amount of cache and is on a 65nm process as opposed to 90nm. Basically the screw ups on the 8** series have been worked out and due to the 65nm process you should easily be able to hit 4GHz.
  2. The Pentium D 920 is cheaper than the Athlon 64 X2 3800+
  3. You won't have to sell you RAM and downgrade to DDR as your current RAM will work with the Pentium D.
  4. From reading your previous Far Cry 32-bit vs 64-bit thread it appears to me a reason for the upgrade is to have a 64-bit capable CPU, both the Athlon X2 3800+ and Pentium D 920 will be ok for this as they both have their own 64-bit technologys.

If you decide to opt for a Pentium D then I would recommend switching your current motherboard for either an Intel 955/975 chipset of Nvidia nForce4 chipset.
