Lol. There's absolutely no reason for that to be true. It breaks several solid comparisons which have been established between cards. If the 5970 performs about 5850 CF, clocked up goes to ~5870CF, I mean come on...
Though it is indeed a lot cheaper.

OP:
The 480, if you take into account the higher stock clocks and cores, is about 25% faster than the 470. That is to say the 470 runs at 80% the speed of the 480, both at stock. Most benchmarks show this. You can see a similar result by just taking the cores from each and applying stock speeds.
GTX470 / GTX480
(448*607) / (480*700)
271936/336000
= 80.9% (GTX 470 of GTX 480)

The price, and watts, however, is much less than that comparatively. The 480 is truly a situation of diminishing returns compared to the 470. I see no reason to get it if you're looking at price/performance unless you just want the BEST, PERIOD. But then... this thread would not exist

The 5970 beats 5850 CF - It's just 2x5870's downclocked, But they can be overclocked with ease.

And yeh I agree go with 2x470's or 2x465's and get some advice on how to flash from NcspecV81.

Pointing out you can OC something is silly, let's OC everything... the comparisons are still the same. Take that up a notch, 2 CF cards will OC easier than a dual chip card (this would hurt your point). It is two 5870 cards, which is why I said clock it up and it is ~5870CF.... I think we can still agree that a 5970 does, in general, not beat GTX480 SLI though.

Don't want to derail the thread...

2x 5870 like mine (pcs+), or vapor x! Runs cool, looks cool, and rapes every game (except metro 2033 lol).

Otherwise, id go for 2x 480's! But they are not really worth the extra $ over 5870's in my opinion.

have fun

I agree that unless you have dough to throw around, 2x470's are a much better value proposition at nearly $150 less than 2x480's. The only reason I have 2x480's is that I got them for a ridiculous deal.

However, the only place a 5970 really beats crossfire 5850's is on paper. In the real world, on average across a wide range of benchmarks, the two setups perform virtually identically. There's a reason the 5970 costs what 2x5850's cost instead of what 2x5870's cost, and that reason is performance.

the 2x 480s do scale better but i suggest a 1200w PSU preferably the antec quatro, Alot of people on the EVGA and extremesystems forums are having massive dramas with the hx 1000w..
