contemplating first ever intel build......

Bit of info required really, im soon going to be changing to a ddr3 mb from my sig rig and im wondering to give intel a whirl and buy a new cpu mem and mb and sell my sig rig. been looking at a rampage ii and a i7 930 im a frustrated folder too as my 955 just doesnt deliver the goods, any advice welcome?

Well, I am not into the folding, but as far as I have seen the Core i7s are excellent folders, I think the majority of points are delivered via nvidia gpus more than the CPUs. (someone who folds correct me if I am wrong)

I would say other than folding, the 955 is probably fast enough for everything a normal user may do. I am pretty sure all the modern quads are capable enough for the everyday users needs for encoding, ripping, converting, or fragging baddies.

I would say it is worth upgrading if you want to fold more effectively, but if thats not a major issue, then id stick with it and do the upgrade on an AMD platform.

Yep!

A suitable GPU is much more effective than an upgrade to the i7, and would likely end up cheaper for the results.

However, a lot depends on your chipset. To date I've not been able to get nVidia cards to boot any several of the AMD chipset based boards.
