Help me configure GTX 295 , thanks!

Thread Starter
Hello Everyone,

I just bought an OEM BFG Geforce GTX 295 and I need some help setting it up. I didn't receive any driver CDs so I was wondering which drivers you guys were using. Can you link me to it please? Windows 7 Pro x64.

I was also playing some Starcraft 2 yesterday, on Ultra, without any lag problems. But I noticed that the card got extremely hot. Do you guys have any cooling solutions for this? I read that you can change the fan speed but the latest driver I installed, 197.45, doesn't seem to have that. The Nvidia Control Panel seems very limited too.

Thanks in advanced.

removing the plastic shroud on your card will help lower temps, assuming you have good ventilation and airflow in your case. i also recommend turning your fan up to 100% when gaming and apply some new TIM to the hsf.

Use MSI Afterburner to change fan speeds and monitor temps. You could turn down some of the clocks also to make it run cooler, but that's rather counter productive.

Don't remove the shroud, that provides better air pressure (iirc), and these cards are known to run hot anyhow, they are fine with it.

Set your fan to around 60 - 70% in MSI AB, then tell us your temps, and have a play around, you'll be suprised how much a simple fan speed can change.

Also, any chance of pictures of it? Never seen an OEM 295, and the OEM 285's and 8800's were sexy.

You can use MSI AB to overclock the card and to change the fan speed.

What temperatures do you get at load, and what do you use to monitor it?

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies. I'm new to Overclock and new to building custom computers so excuse my lack of terminologies and knowledge.

I will install the MSI, thank you, and let you know my results.

No problem, that's what we are here for, you'll learn a lot here, people are happy to help. Welcome also.

Also, I love the 295's, they are real beasts, even now, my all time favorite graphics card. Good choice.

Thank you everyone, especially SmokinWaffle. I installed the MSI Afterburner, raised my fan speed to 70% and it helps so much! Doesn't go over 42c. =]

This site rocks! You guys rock! Thanks again.

Now about overclocking. Easy to do or should I even bother?

An overclock can provide noticeable improvements in gaming. Here is a good guide to follow for the GTX 295...

http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.a...tno=620&pgno=0

Also, if you want overclocking and fan control from the NVIDIA Control Panel, you need to install NVIDIA Systems Tools. The Performance module in that installation gives you those options.

@@B-Con - Thanks! Both sites are very useful. I've already installed the System Tools and it's awesome. Hmm, I set my fan to run on 75% at all times (Even not gaming). Is that okay? The default is 40%.

With this powerful of a card, would I even notice the gaming difference?
