3rd core in Athlon X4 is jumping multipliers!!

Thread Starter
My Athlon II x4 CPU seems to be acting up. while playing my favorite game it crashed and when i tried to run it again it crashed again so i checked AMD overdrive to see what was going on. The 3rd core was doing flip flops from 10x multiplier to 14x multiplier every 2 seconds or so, from 2800Mhz to 2000Mhz. i restarted my computer and it seems to be fine now.. should i take this processor back. is it broken???

Probably a bios bug, or maybe even windows caused this !

If it's fine now then you should be ok but if it does it again disable all the power saving stuff in windows.

Did you disable cool 'n quiet in the bios? That could be the reason for the multiplier underclocking.

I'm not sure about the crashes, if you can RMA, I'd go for it.

Check your bios, if that isn't the problem then hopefully someone else can give you some insight.

that sounds like it may be the problem. i may have to look in the Bios and see if there is a power saving option also. im under the impression that a bad processor would do more than just jump multipliers, it would gave a BSOD right??

Possibly. A bad cpu could be the reason for crashes, but you never know. If you do get a BSOD, tell us the error so we can diagnose.

I never liked biostar boards, they were always cheaply built. I hope you didn't pay much for it. When you go to upgrade, try for an Asus, Zotac, or MSI. They've been reliable for me.

It was worth what you paid for it time to hunt out a better board.

The Athlon II x4 630 is a 95w part, so running it at stock should work fine. It's something else, possibly.
