CPU throttling?

Ok here's the deal. I can run Bad Company 2 pretty decently. I'll start up a multiplayer session and get a consistent 55-65 FPS. But after a long gaming session, my FPS will continually drop. By the end of a 2 or 3 hour long gaming session, my 55-65 FPS is now a consistent 40-45 FPS.

Seems like it could be a heat issue and I was thinking maybe my CPU was throttling back it's frequency and causing slow down. I do run CPU-Z/GPU-Z/Core Temp to monitor temperatures during my gaming session.

I know my thermal specification is 60.1C which gives means it should start throttling around 80.1C. Maximum temps I get under load is 76C though, so I don't think it should be throttling.
What should I look out for on that monitoring software to make sure it's not my temperatures interfering with my FPS? And, how do I know, according to that software, whether my CPU is throttling or not? If my frequency stays the same the entire gaming session, does that mean my CPU is NOT throttling, and that CPU temperatures have nothing to do with my FPS drop? Thanks.

I would think that any throttling would show up in a monitoring program. If you see the clock speed drop, then it's a suspect.

Are you doing similar monitoring with the GPU? I'd think heat would hurt it before the CPU.

P.S. Are the throttling features enabled in BIOS? If you're overclocking you might want those off, as they tend to hurt stability on OC.

If the freq stays the same the whole sessions, the cpu is not being throttled. I'd watch the temps to see how high they get, especially if you're on stock cooling.

It could be that your video card is throttling.

What are your temperatures in game for both your CPU and GPU?

Yes, read above. I am doing GPU temp monitoring as well. I'll do a quick test and give you some load readouts of my 8800 Ultra.

I'm using a Big Typhoon air cooler for my CPU. But it is 3 years old, so that's probably why my CPU isn't running a bit cooler.

I'll let you know that shortly. How could I tell if my GPU is throttling? If the gpu clock, memory clock, and shader clock all stay the same during gaming, does that mean it's not throttling?

Ok here are the temperatures.

MAX temperature for the entire gaming session under load for the GPU was 85C.
MAX temperature for the entire gaming session under load for the CPU was 74C.

The CPU frequency and the GPU clock/memory/shader stayed the same throughout the entire session.

Any help?

Another simple question I have is this:

Is it possible to lose FPS due to CPU/GPU temperatures alone, assuming it is NOT throttling the frequencies/clocks?

Or does the only time temperature effects FPS is when it throttles?

Whatever your problem is with decreasing FPS, it is not temperature related. 85C is typical with air cooled 8800 ultra. 74C is no where near throttling temps on E6600...but for determining throttling temps, you go by "distance to tjmax", cpu temp specs are irrelevant.

And yes if you throttle, by definition the frequency of cpu drops.
