CPU throttling? - Page 2

And yes if you throttle, by definition the frequency of cpu drops.
Ok so if I see no throttling, is it possible the temperature itself can decrease FPS (if the temperature is high enough)?

NO, it is not your temps.

It could just be a driver issue. Considering how old G80 is, I wouldn't be surprised if the newer drivers cause more issues.

I think you're missing my question. I'm not asking if it's my temps. I'm asking if..say in the future I notice something similar and my temps are even higher...but the temperatures are not causing my GPU or CPU to throttle. Is it possible the temps ITSELF can cause a drop in FPS? Or is the only way the FPS are going to drop is if the temps cause throttling?

No, higher temps in themselves will not reduce FPS, unless they cause throttling which you would see in lower mhz. And I did understand your question, all 3 times.

Ah ok. Since you didn't answer my question, I didn't realize you had understood it. My bad. Thanks for the help.

#1 clean your big typhoon if it's dusty. Your temps are high.

#2 get a hold of Everest so you can log a gaming session. You can monitor CPU/GPU temps, CPU speed, GPU clocks, voltages, everything. Max/min reports really are useless, you need to see an entire log during the session so you can see what's happening real-time.

Everest is the best for diagnosing probs like this. It will also show you what apps are stopping/starting while running your game (maybe hogging memory). If your system memory usage is getting maxed, slowdowns like that can occur.

You really should log, your problem may be obvious when you look at 30-60 minutes of an Everest report.

Considering the information you provided, it doesn't seem temperature is an issue. Neither of those temps are outlandish...although for simple game load 76 is high.

The next thing I would look at is RAM. It could be a Bad Company programming issue, it could be a driver issue on your vid card (Video RAM), or it could be you need a bios update. Check for the latest updates on your vid card and the game. A lot of games are programmed poorly, and the use of RAM becomes inefficient over time. Flushing your memory by rebooting or restarting app often fixes this problem. But usually can also be updated by new drivers.

First though, do this little test:
When you see your FPS drop, do a quick restart of the game. Do your FPS jump back up? If that doesn't work, try a computer reboot, does your FPS jump back up? Often times you just need to flush your memory. Especially if you alt-tab a lot. But rather than hardware, I think it sounds like you have a software problem.

Regardless, you may want to reseat your heatsink. 76 degrees running a game seems AWFULLY high. I know I have a different CPU, but I game at 38-42 degrees.
