Voltage Tweeking Discovery!

Thread Starter
I had the day off today and wanted to see if I could make my rig more power/heat efficient. A few months back I successfully overclocked my Q9550 to 4.0ghz with a bit of voltage tweaking. I found that no matter how much vcore I put into the CPU, I couldn't achieve 4ghz without increasing the cpu term and northbridge voltages. With the cpu term and nb increase to 1.3v each and my vcore to 1.31, 4ghz was stable.

Today, I was wondering if the stability achieved with the increase in cpu term and nb volts meant that I could lower my vcore and stay stable. My hypothesis was correct and the result were astounding in my opinion. I found that I could now lower my vcore by .05, from 1.31 to 1.26. I effectively lowered my power consumption, and heat generation by almost 10c @ load and perhaps even increased the life span of my cpu.

I believe the few hours I put into this today was well worth the results I had achieved. If any of you have increased voltages besides the vcore in order to achieve stability, I highly suggest seeing if you can now lower your vcore.

I've noticed several overclocks can benefit from these bumps - it's like it gives the CPU a little lift - doesn't have to work as hard to communicate to the outside.

Absolutely. Many people can can't over a particular frequency with a certain level of vcore and call it quits, while raising another voltage will make it stable and allow you to lower the vcore.

I always hesitate on FSB Term and NB voltages, just because I have no idea whats safe.

It's not hard to look up. As long as your increase in within reason, you'll be safe.

I may try that and get my 4.4ghz oc to run at 1.25v or so. Probably not, but I wish.

It's definitely possible, as shown by my results!
