Three DX10 capable cards or one DX11 capable card... Hmm... I'd go for the newest generation any day.

Look, you wouldn't see any increase over two GTX 285s by adding a third. It's stupid to go over two for ANY card. Unless they scale incredibly well like the HD4770 did.

Well, I bought the three gtx 280's. not enough connectors for 3 way, and for some reason, after a while playing a game, sli would cutout not matter what 2 cards i used tried different combo. so I sent them back what could I do to gain some speed on my pc as it sits? can I go quad core? neweggs recommended psu for what I have now is 832 watts which I have an xfx 850. if I go quad core the recommended is 916 watts what are my chances that my psu wont be enough?
