I've setup quick and dirty VPN using DDWRT's built in PPTP function. Easy.

but also your school might block outgoing vpn connections.
Harder to implement this if it's a SSL-VPN that goes out on port 443... Can't really block that port

ah true..i'm not an expert on networking i just research stuff. I said that because I setup a pfsense box at work and for some reason my VPN doesnt make a full connection..as in my IP is that of my home IP but i cant access any resources. If i bypass the pfsense box and connect directly to the campus' wifi it works fine.
