Need help deciding on new graphics card

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a new video card as my current one (Radeon HD 3650 series) just doesn't quite cut it for me.

Maximum price is 200$ for the card. Preferably PCIe 2.0 x16.
I've looked at the Radeon HD 5770, but am still undecided, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, general information would help me out (why or why not get this). Really just looking for ideas and guidance.

I am not counting the cost of a new PSU towards the card (I currently have a 500w).

Games I play are Everquest 2, Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2. While BF2 can almost be run at max settings, I'm still falling a little short. EQ2 I average around 30FPS depending on what zone I'm in, would love to run this game on max.

Thanks in advance guys.

An HD 5770 would definitely be your best bet in that price range...in fact it's a little under. Another option would be a GTX 275 which would be slightly faster, but it's older tech.

By the way, you'll probably want a new PSU simply because it seems yours is a no name brand, you always want a good PSU it's the heart of the system. Don't want it killing anything now do we. Good brands include Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, Silverstone mainly although other brands have A FEW good PSU. 500-600w is definitely fine for your system. I assume it's a prebuilt?

Yeah this comp is pre-built, which at the time I was fine with. A couple years later though... it shows. Looks like the PSU is a Raptor?

But a 5770 sounds solid? Any suggestions on what brand to go with, MSI, Sapphire?

Well you're going to want a reference card or the Hawk (there is one fan at the back of the card) because it has voltage control so you can OC.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-447-_-Product

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-490-_-Product (MSI Hawk, SWEET at OCing)

EDIT: As for PSU what is your budget? Are you planning on keeping it for your next build? Will you ever add another GPU to your system?

In the immediate future I do not plan on adding another graphics card, mainly because I'm fairly illiterate when it comes to the xfire and all that fun stuff. Also, what's the deal with the PCIe 2.1, I saw that just start to pop-up on the GPUs recently. I read on here that they are compatible with 2.0 x16 slots though, correct?

The PSU though, if I feel comfortable with this one and the new card, I'll probably keep it for another couple months. I'm open to suggestions on what you'd recommend for an upgrade though.

Thanks again man, really appreciate all the help.

PCIe 2.1 is just a minor update of 2.0. The actually bus speed has not changed and it should not affect your decisions at all. And it is backwards compatible.

As for PSU's that are budget, but good, you really have to look for deals because that's when you really can recommend ones that have good price/performance ration. But some good ones include:

Corsair TX Series
Corsair HX Series
Corsair AX Series (Coming July)
Seasonic M12II Builds
Antec TruePower New Series
Antec Earthwatts Series
All Enermax PSU's
I won't post links, but you can look them up on Newegg. Basically what you want in a PSU is low ripple (change in voltage) and high efficiency. The only way to really test these is using methods done specifically by jonnyguru.com His reviews are great you should really check them out.

Also take a look at this link http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...take-psus.html This is another OCN member on PSUs. This link is in particular for the Thermaltake brand, but at the bottom of his post he has the same structured thread about a bunch of other brands too. Check it out.

What resolution are you on?
Maybe try a used 4890, no DX11, but you can pretty much maxed out everything on it @ 1080p.
And it will be fine on a 500W.

A single 5770 handles 1650 X 1050 very well, 1080P depends on the game/settings.

As mentioned above a 4890 is a good card for DX10 and single GPU performance, although it certainly won't handle everything maxed out at 1920 X 1080. Maybe a long list of titles but I can also think of many games a single 5850 wont even come close to maxing out with playable frames.

If you can get a 5830 for cheap, as in $190-$210, thats not too bad either.
