GTX 480 For My System

Exclusively for gaming, would it be worth upgrading to the 480?

I was planning on doing a fresh build later this year, but if getting a 480 will increase my framerates enough, i'll do that now.

I play a wide variety of games, some of them very taxing (yes you, metro). I play in 1080p, too.

I don't know if the rest of my system will hold it back

Or the 5870. The 480 is the most powerful of what I'd call the 'sensible' cards (5970 /w 4Gb RAM? 0_o), but it's a hot bugger.

Also, I'm fairly sure your current dual-core would choke the 480 something fierce, but you would see a performance increase now.

i considered a 5870, but decided on the 480 for 2 reasons.

folding performance, and sli scaling.

Valid reasons. I think you would see a performance gain by upgrading now, but I don't think the gain will be all that big.

Then again I can't be really sure, I've never had the model of Proc you do.

I had a E8400 @ 4.0 Ghz, then a Q9550 @ 3.825, and experienced both with my 470's.

The E8400 was a huge bottleneck in CPU-intensive games like BFBC2, but otherwise, it performed on par with the Q9550 for most other games. In CPU-intensive games, however, the Q9550 did provide 15-20 FPS improvement over the E8400.

Then, I went to an i7 930 and let's just say that this thing is what really allowed me to stretch the legs of my 470's. However, if you're not planning to SLI, i'd say that a highly-clocked E8400 will be BARELY enough to not completely starve a 480 - otherwise, if you're bent on sticking with Socket 775, an upgrade to a quad core like a Q9550 will net you around a 15-25% increase in performance in CPU-intensive/multi-threaded games.

Going i7 with a high OC would eliminate pretty much all bottlenecks for this current generation of GPU's, even with SLI/Tri-SLI.

LOL NO. When i do my next build (x58, i7, etc.) i would likely do it.

I'm considering upgrading my video card now though, as opposed to waiting 'till i have the funds for a whole new system.

That's the thing, i plan on upgrading to an i7 930 in a couple of months, so if the 480 will be starved on this platform, i'll wait. No way in hell i'm dropping $300 on a new 775 cpu.
