If I buy the Touch Pro 2 off ebay and put my TMo sim card will... - Page 2

You won't have a problem, just make sure you disable data. Also, have Tmobile add a data-block to your account so that you don't accidentally get charged for data. But like others have said, what's the point of getting a smartphone if you're not going to use its main function?

i don't see how you can continue to use the argument that smart phones have some kind of "intended purpose" that is set in stone? The term smartphone is an overly exaggerated euphemism defined by MOST people for a device that can access the internet. The problem with the argument is that most smartphones now, have similar price points(when it comes to 2 year contracts, make sure you read this text before you rebut!)to cellular devices which were not classified anywhere near smart phone(see old school flip phones with nothing more than talk and text). So why would I bother to enter into another contract and not get my moneys worth from a crappier phone when I can perform all of the same functions on a smart phone without spending the extra money(if it has wi-fi)?

I just love the argument these carriers use when I ask why they require the data plans. Its so they can "provide amazing deals to their customers!". Ask the CSRs if its really because they need to make their money back from offering expensive handsets at such discounted prices and they tell you "no it's basically so that you agree to continue to use our service for X amount of years". Nice try but same ****. Smartphones are nothing more than devices by which I can install applications usually designed for a specific platform. The way I intend to use it is up to me, and the way I intend to use any smartphone would be by taking advantage of the hardware that is DELIBERATELY INSTALLED into the handset(aka wi-fi) as a better alternative to MY USES.

Can you honestly say that you find it economical to enter into 2 year contracts just to upgrade to a free phone that has features that are more "incline to my use"? If I like texting, then obviously all I need is a phone with a keyboard right? Too bad most of the qwerty keyboard phones that don't require a data plan usually have terrible keyboards or are generally just bad handsets(see samsung comeback).

A typical argument yet silly argument made to that would be "so spend the money and get something good". Okay, fair, and I don't have a problem spending decent money on a handset. What I do have a problem with is paying for a data plan when I can have access to the same features via a built in hardware feature.

I guess everybody overlooked the part where he mentioned ebay. More than likely Dark-Asylum came across a reasonably priced smartphone but that's just me.

Who would buy from ebay if they had to pay full price for an item?

Besides, you can't use the 'too cheap to get a data plan' gibberish when you aren't the one paying for it. Not everybody's life revolves around social networking sites.

... yes. Really.

OP, I'm pretty sure you can add the data plan to your account, get your phone up and running, then cancel your data plan; you should be refunded a pro-rated amount. This is only considering you buy the phone unlocked and not with a contract through T-Mobile. Just... don't reset your phone, because then it will probably require you to add a data plan again to start it up. Source: I have an Android and it works the same way.

Typically, if you have the spare time to use your phone for a long session of web access, you have Wi-Fi access nearby. If this is his case, why should he be forced to commit to 24 months of a data plan service? That's roughly $720 wasted, nearly enough for a sick i7 build to enjoy and have more involvement on OCN.

My friend says that when you slide the keyboard out all the way the touch screen becomes unresponsive meaning you can't use it as a touch screen. Is this by design?

Thank God.

Sorry if you found anything I said to be harsh/snyde, I retract it. I just meant to say that it's sort of wrong to criticize the OP's preference of not getting a data plan to save a good deal of money rather than spend it on a feature he does not see himself really making good use of. I especially found it odd that an Editor here would have that kind of insight on this thread... but I do understand what you mean. I like my data plan on my Android, and wouldn't get rid of it unless I was in a bad financial situation. In that case, I'd temporarily drop it, and I'm assuming that's why the OP doesn't want a data plan. He's not necessarily being 'cheap,' he possibly could and likely would pay for it if he really wanted it.

Sounds like a defect, I had a G1 that did something similar to that. The screen backlight would turn off when I slid the keyboard out. Don't see why the touch response would go off though.

No the touchscreen should work when the keyboard is slid out. I have personally played with the VZW version and can confirm this.
