Critique my Car Photography *56k* - Page 3

Very nice. If I had to criticise I'd say:
5 is overexposed, I guess because of the sun, maybe you could have used a skylight filter and done a bit of editing afterwards?
7 is technically good, but I never like shots that are that close to the front of the car, and at that angle, you don't get the impression of the car, and lose all the lines.

Alright, Thanks for all your comments everyone. I will definitely take into consideration of what you all have said. The Angled shots were just a first time experiment, personally i don't like them to much either but i wanted to see what others thought. Also i noticed a lot of you mentioned using a polarized filter, i don't have one but i do have a ND filter, do you think that would be an alright alternative?

As for the reflections from people/other cars on the subject, its very hard because yes the cars are overly pact in and there is always a crowd. I tried to do a little bit of reflection clean up. But next time i go out i will definitely watch out for people in the paint.

Not bad. Can't quite tell what the car itself is but not bad. I can see the dirt in the hood ornament, too.

As far as technique goes these two are good. But the choice of subject...you couldn't find an uglier mustang at the show, could ya?

Those are damned good, but the second one is a bit dark IMO. Note how part of the GTO nameplate in the grille is obscured by a shadow.

Again a bit dark. Must have been late in the day, eh?

Oooh, nice and creative shot of a TriPower intake system. Again, though, bit on the dark side.

Not bad at all. Way better than what I could do.

I'd say an ND filter would be pretty good, from what I've just looked at having googled it, it seems fairly similar to a skylight filter. I find that with a polarizing filter you often lose the shine of the cars, and if you're not careful you can end up making the whole shot too dark. Do it right, in the right place, with the right light and it looks awesome.

2. Try to have more.. car in the picture, I think you could had lowered the camera a bit and a bit to the left and you'd have an even better picture.

7. I like this one, but overexposure kinda killed it. I'm sure there's some filter for things like that.

8. I'm not liking the frame again. You tilted the camera to fit the car in the frame, yet a bit of the tire is missing.

You do some very good work overall though

In some of the shots, especially the later ones, they feel a tad under-exposed for me, dulling some of the visual impact that you are usually looking for.

If you are looking to actually do some vehicular photo-shoots, my advise would be to pick up a magazine or two to critique the photos that their professional photographers make. Try to figure out how they got their angles, why they chose their locations, etc.

One magazine I HEARTILY suggest for this, is EVO. It is an imported British mag, but they have had some of the most jaw-dropping shots I have ever seen in a mag. Their photographers are artists, compared to American car photographers.

Then find some friends with cars, or got to a car show and ask someone if they'd like to do a photoshoot with their car some time?
stage shots are completely different then show shots. when its staged you can move the car around, setup lighting, get ppl out of the way, etc. but it isnt a bad idea to pick up a mag to see how the pros do it, to me tho it seems like show shots are more geared toward the environment or atmosphere of the event.

ND cannot be used to replace a CPL. but a CPL can be use to replace a ND. CPL are use to cut reflections, add a nice blue color to water/sky and in a pinch could use it as a ~2 stop ND. a ND is used to slow down the lens so you can either open up the aperture, or slow down the shutter (say to pan a car during noon).

You definitely need to checkout some of the European car mags (like EVO or Top Gear). Their photography is way ahead of "car and driver" or "road and track".

Also, less depth of field wouldn't hurt you in those particular scenes where you can see other cars or people in the background.
