First Overclock

Hello everyone,

I've been building my own machines for about 15 years now but have just recently decided to try overclocking. My last mobo died on me so I bought a replacement CPU/board combo. Please critique my OC so far and let me know what I can do to improve it. Most of the system is about 3 years old so it's not top of the line.

System:
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM Motherboard
AMD Phenom II x2 550 Callisto CPU
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W Power Supply
RADEON HD3870 512MB Video Card
CORSAIR XMS 4GB DDR2 800MHZ RAM
Western Digital Raptor 10k RPM HDD

Overclock:
The first thing I did was unlock the 3rd and 4th cores of the Phenom. It was easy enough, took me about 10 minutes to do. the CPU isn't a black edition so I can't adjust the multiplier. I have taken the clock to 240 (3.7Ghz) at 1.35 Vcore and all other settings stock and Prime95 blend for about 10 hours with no errors. Taking it to 250 (3.875Ghz) with Vcore 1.4 runs stable on Prime95 blend for 2 to 7 hours. At this point I am getting a rounding error for the 3rd or 4th cores. My temps are a bit high with the cooler I have so I've ordered a CORSAIR H50. With what I have now on full load I am hitting about 61c. In the mean time I've got a nice fan cooling the CPU. Full load I am at about 53c.

Questions:
What is my best option to adjust and stabilize it at 250 clock?

How much further can I safely push the Vcore.

What max temp should I stay under (I want to try to keep it at about 50-55c max)

After I hit the max on the CPU what is next? What can I do with RAM, Graphics...

you put the vcore up more, but that also raises your temps, so at some point youre either going to hit "the wall" where no matter what you do you cant OC any higher, or your temperatures are going to be too high to overclock any further.

In order to get stable though, you up vcore.

How much further can I safely push the Vcore.

up to around 1.55, but your temps will probably be too high at that point, so the issue wont be too high of a vcore, itll be too high temps

You should try to stay under 60c when stress testing. the limit for amd chips is 62c, so you dont want to go too close to that.

you can go over 55c when stress testing, because that puts your temps higher than when doing other things like gaming, folding, or rendering so if you have 60c while stress testing youll probably have 55c or so when gaming or doing other things like that.

so 60c is fine when stress testing, but when it is that close to 62c, you want to be watching it, rather than leaving it on for 10 hours overnight.

After I hit the max on the CPU what is next? What can I do with RAM, Graphics...

You can overclock your gpu, which will increase performance a lot, but overclocking the ram doesnt really do much.

Your gpu is pretty old, and doesnt overclock well without having temps too high. In fact, youll have so small of an overclock that you probably will only get a 3-5 frame per second increase when gaming at medium settings on most new games and 2-3 on max settings.

I would strongly recommend a new gpu if youre considering overclocking it. (5770? they go for 120$ or so used)

Max,

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking I would have to push the Vcore up higher but didn't know how high was safe. I'm at 1.4 now so I still have a few steps to go, I should be able to stabilize it at this speed. I would really like to hit 4Ghz even if it is just for a benchmark . Once I get the H50 in I don't think temps will be much of an issue. I'm using an Arctic Freeze 7 Pro now and am barely breaking 60c. I will probably leave the GPU alone, It is the oldest item in the computer right now and as you said it's pretty old. I'd like to get a new one but I'm a bit of a pinny pincher and I just got two new toys for my PC. Well... three with the cooler...
Again, thanks for the tips. +Rep!

Ya with the h50 most people get around 38c on stock clocks+volts, so you'll be fine at 4ghz with that. For now there's not really much you can do besides wait unfortunately, because you're not going to be able to get any higher clocks without raising the voltage, because that would raise your temps as well which are already Maxed out pretty much, but when you get that h50, your CPU will overclock like a dream. You might even get 4.2 if you got a chip from a good batch + good stepping, but don't count on it

cheers!

I got my H50 in today. Got it installed in a push-pull config. No load I'm setting at 34c (1.45 Vcore) and prime95 full load I'm hitting 52c. It still has to burn in the heat sink compound so I should see a few deg drop from that too.
