what i am planning is to unlock the other 2 cores and cut the case up a bit for cable management and also i wanted to know if the psu can be placed upside-down OK, and i would cut the top of the case where the fan blows hot air out will that cause any problems? First time attempting something like this so input would me very helpful.

What chip is it? I'm not trawling through links... if it doesn't unlock, that's too bad, if it's a phenom, it's still a ripper chip, I'm getting one for my family (they don't know it's a gaming build... shhhh, hehe)

Can you add names aswell.

Anyway, if it's a Phenom II x2 they are the same price as Athlon II x4 and offer similar performance (when both are quads, otherwise Athlon rapes)

Yh thanks

The x2 550 is the same price and socket as the Athlon II x4
I say go for the Athlon, it is a definite quad.

You shouldn't build a ... build around unlocking, that should be an advantage to already owning a qaud and wanting more performance

Negative Ghostrider, That build is Unsatisfactory!
I'll put together a better build for you, just give me a few minutes.

EDIT: The following Basic $600 Build will get you started off in better position to upgrade down the road when you save up more money.
  1. You get 4GB of very good RAM.
  2. A way Better Motherboard.
  3. Faster, Bigger, Better Hard drive than the one you chose
  4. A Case with bottom Mount PSU and top exhaust so you don't have to go and cut anything.

4GB RAM+Antec 300 Case w/ 430w PSU

MSI 5770 Hawk + MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.421941

Phenom II x2 550

Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152181

DVD Burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106289

Total: $597.59 Shipped (After $10 Gift card cash back)
$25 in rebates also available but I don't deal with those, they often take too long and are not worth it IMO.

The Antec Case comes with an included 430 PSU that you can upgrade later if you decide to Crossfire but for now it should be fine with this build since it will only pull around ~320w @ 90% Load.
You can also still unlock the Retail CPU in this build and use the stock heatsink to get a mild overclock to about 3.3Ghz.
