Newbie - opinion on new build please...

Thread Starter
Hi everyone!

I'm brand new to this forum as I've not built a system in a number of years, and I'd really appreciate getting your opinion on the system that I plan on building.

Please could you tell me if there are any compatability issues and just your general opinons on the below kit?

Antec Three Hundred Case
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
ASUS GeForce GTX 470 1280MB
Pioneer BDR-205 Blu-ray Disc Writer OEM
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH (2x2GB) DDR3
Samsung P2350 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB WD10EALS
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM

Also, I've not set up a new system for a few years or ever used a SATA hard drive and I'd like to know if I'll have any issues setting windows up without a floppy drive? I used to format/partition/install using the floppy drive boot.

Thanks a lot for your help in advance people!!

I notice you didn't mention aftermarket cooling or a power supply.
Other than those points it looks like a good build to me.

I'd add a Scythe Mugen 2 as cpu cooler, and an Antec TPN 750 for the power supply and you're good to go

I agree, the Mugen 2 is a really nice cooler, and cools my chip like a champ!

you'll love that pioneer BDR-205. i love mine

also, you may want to get a aftermarket cooler. they almost always outperform the stock coolers. although im not familiar with the amd stock cooler. but i know the regular(not the 980x) intel stock coolers are terrible.

Looks good, however I have a few recommendations:

Get a better case, ie Lian Li Lancool K-56/58/60/62, CM 692 Advanced, CM HAF 922/932, CM Storm Scout, Antec 902/1200, Silverstone Raven RV01/RV02... take your pick, personally I'd recommend a Lian Li or Coolermaster, but the others are decent too.

Get a Samsung Spinpoint F3. It's slightly more expensive, but faster than the one you chose - and it's cheaper than a WD Black. Most people will recommend either of these two drives, and with good reason.

Get aftermarket cooling - as the others have said, a Scythe Mugen II is good, especially if you won't be overclocking insanely, and even then it'll hold it's own fairly well.

With Windows install, it's very easy. Insert the CD Rom, go into the boot menu and select to boot from the CD Rom.

BTW, that Blu-Ray Drive you selected is OEM, and so will not come with any of the cables required...

What is your budget? People here may be able to throw together a build.

Also, with that 470, just so you know, it runs quite hot and uses a fair bit of power. If you are unconcerned/nVidia fanboy, by all means get it, it's a good GPU. However, I'd personally recommend a 5770/5850/5870... particularly the 5870, it'll run cooler, use less power and performs better.

For PSU, I'd seriously recommend a 750W Seasonic X-Series. If you can't afford it, get a Corsair HX-750 or 850, and if you aren't fussed on modular, a TX-750 or 850.

Hope this helps!

With aftermarket coolers so cheap, and also being easier to work out fitting at the initial construction phase, there is almost no excuse NOT to get one unless you are scraping up every last penny already. OP is buying a GT470, so he can't be that short of the $40 for a mugen.

And I disagree LAF, the Antec 300 is a perfectly good case, and it's significantly smaller than the beasts you are recommending.
Also while the Corsair HX are good PSUs, the Antec TPN is a better one for the money.

nice to see someone building a good rig, but like everyone else is saying that you dont have a PSU or Cpu cooler in your list, do you have them already or are they just not on your list?

Cheers for the responses guys.

Yeah I had not thought about cooling yet. I wont be water cooling. Any other suggestions for CPU cooler?

What about the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler?

And PSU I forgot, but I was thinking of Thermaltake Litepower 700W. Is that alright?

Thanks.

No that's not a very good power supply, the Antec Truepower New TP-650 would be much better.

That cooler will do a decent job, but it's not a high-end aircooler.
