Newbie - opinion on new build please... - Page 2

Skip the Thermaltake PSU, the majority of their PSU range is pretty poor to be honest, and skip Coolermaster for the same reason.
Antec TPN is a slightly better PSU than the Corsair and cheaper to boot.
Other brands worth considering are Seasonic and Enermax, both expensive, but darned fine.
The CM H212+ is a decent cooler, not as good as the Mugen but also getting a bit hard to find.
Other coolers to consider:
Xigmatek s1283 Dark Knight - a long standing favourite of the AMD set.
Corsair H50 sealed mini watercooler - a nice little cooler, and as easy to set up as air cooling

don't worry about not having a floppy drive. All bios now load dvd/usb pretty much out of the box...so you will install windows using a dvd.

As for the PSU, I couldn't agree with LAF more. The seasonic x750 is the best power supply out there, that is if you don't need more juice. And with your build, 750 is plenty. It is a bit steep, so Corsair is a great alternative. They get their parts from Seasonic.

As for an aftermarket cooler, my heatsink/fan is i7 only...but:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/88..._Hot_Item.html is fantastic. I think you will need a retention kit for am3, but i'll let you do that research.

That being said, I'm partial to Thermalright/Cogage, so check this out:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/56...66&id=4gRzsJp3

Thermalright True or the 120 usually ranks right up there in the top 2 or 3 for Heatsinks. If you can get a retention kit for my Cogage, that's a great cheaper alternative.

If you go with the Thermalright, Cogage or Prolima...you will be VERY VERY happy.

Get a better case, ie Lian Li Lancool K-56/58/60/62, CM 692 Advanced, CM HAF 922/932, CM Storm Scout, Antec 902/1200, Silverstone Raven RV01/RV02... take your pick, personally I'd recommend a Lian Li or Coolermaster, but the others are decent too.

Get a Samsung Spinpoint F3. It's slightly more expensive, but faster than the one you chose - and it's cheaper than a WD Black. Most people will recommend either of these two drives, and with good reason.

Get aftermarket cooling - as the others have said, a Scythe Mugen II is good, especially if you won't be overclocking insanely, and even then it'll hold it's own fairly well.

With Windows install, it's very easy. Insert the CD Rom, go into the boot menu and select to boot from the CD Rom.

BTW, that Blu-Ray Drive you selected is OEM, and so will not come with any of the cables required...

What is your budget? People here may be able to throw together a build.

Also, with that 470, just so you know, it runs quite hot and uses a fair bit of power. If you are unconcerned/nVidia fanboy, by all means get it, it's a good GPU. However, I'd personally recommend a 5770/5850/5870... particularly the 5870, it'll run cooler, use less power and performs better.

For PSU, I'd seriously recommend a 750W Seasonic X-Series. If you can't afford it, get a Corsair HX-750 or 850, and if you aren't fussed on modular, a TX-750 or 850.

Hope this helps!
Some very helpful information here!!!

I would advise to pick out the Cooler Master Scout Case, along with the Samsung F3 1TB Drive. Much faster.
The Scythe Mugen 2 I think can hold it's on against the TRUE, so I would say you could overclock pretty crazy...
I also recommend a 5850/5870. Both great cards that run cooler and use less power than a GTX470
I also recommend the Seasonic X-Series Power Supplys. You will be fine with their 650w version I believe they have. There gold rated, so you'll have plenty of headroom.

Really appreciate the vote of confidence there, thanks

BTW, I accidentally misspelt confidence as ocnfidence - should have left it... haha

OT, I don't mean to sound like a monotonous teacher telling you to work, but it is very difficult to help someone without a budget, especially when you've picked fairly high end parts - this gives the impression that you have a large budget.

Once again amazing feedback guys.

LAF - I'm in Sydney, and my budget is $2k ozzy and i'm already upto about $2.2k, but I can flex it.
Stupid question - what cables do I need for the DVD drive?

Ok upon your advice i'm definitely making the following changes:

Upgrade to Antec TPN 750 PSU - more expensive but should be worth it
Upgreade to Samsung Spinpoint F3 - same price

The points i'm still considering are:

1.) Case - The Antec 300 is pretty cheap at $69, where as the Lianli and CM are all about $150. Plus I had read some pretty solid reviews of the Antec. Is the upgrade definitely worth it?

2.) CPU cooler - I'm struggling to find the Mugen II in stock. WHat do you think about the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 Red Scorpion Edition? Or is the dark night edition (extra $20) worth it?

3.) Change GFX Nvidia to ASUS ATI Radeon HD5850 DirectCu TOP Edition. This is $20 cheaper. But I've always been an Nvidia man. I changed a few years back and had a bad experience. Is this ATI card really that good?

Thanks.

The Antec case is fine, keep that.
The S1283 is still a great cooler for most overclocks. You can always wait on buying an aftermarket cooler, and just buy the best thermal grease you can get right now.
Def go ATI right now. Nvidia can't match them effectively right now.

Yes, the 58xx cards are all very good...

Not too much knowledge with Antec PSU's, but I've heard they're not bad...

With the case, the Lian Li K-56 should not be that much, I am getting one for my family at around $80, and it's an awesome case.

If you can stretch a tiny bit more, the storm scout is $116 from PC Case Gear in melbourne, unsure about elsewhere, but should be around the same.

If you can't find the Mugen II, I'd recommend a Prolimatech Megahalems (make sure it will ift your case - it's damn big), a Noctua U12, or a Xigmatek Dark Knight. Haven't heard much about the Red Scorpion, so it may or may not be mediocre...

Is that a 1TB or 500GB F3? The 500GB ones are faster, but I understand if you need more space Twould also cheapen it a little bit. You could go with the Phenom 955, they are pretty much the same chip, just one has a higher clock.

Try to get a reference GPU, but if you can't, Asus is a good choice as they allow voltage control (for overclocking)

Forgot about this. Yes, go with the X4 955 instead of the 965. There the same chip for the most part, both overclock roughly the same, but you can save money getting the X4 955

The red scorpion has a glowy led fan that's not as good as on the DK (which means a bit poorer cooling), but you could always swap out the fan for a gentle typhoon or a yate loon... My advice, buy the RS and a 120mm yate loon or gentle typhoon and fit that instead,
For a smaller case, the Antec 300 is a good one. I've done a build in it for my best mate, and he loves it. I have the Silverstone PS-02 and it is about the same size, and just as good (if not a little better in some ways).
Cases are a very personal thing, if you like the look of the Antec 300, get it, it is not a bad one by any measure.
The Lian Li and CM scouts are, on the other hand, amazing cases, but they do cost twice as much.

Onto the GPU, the 5850 beats the 470 in 8/10 benchmarks, the only downside of the ATi cards is drivers, ATi is pretty variable on those, and they can be terrible on occasion. Nvidia's drivers are dull, and usually just plain work.

For the cases, go have a look around newegg.com, yes, I know they are American, but they do have a great image collection on most cases you can browse through, to see the cases.

If you find the drivers lacking, you can always head over to Omega drivers, they modify the ATi ones (Correct me if I'm wrong, I think that is the right website)
