Running Cat6 outside

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Well, I've decided I need to run CAT6 to the computer in my room, as when my brothers watch youtube, etc. on their laptops, my ping times go through the roof. Also, transferring DVD images to my server is agonizing over wireless. I talked to my dad, and he does not want to run a wire through the wall, due to the placement of where we would have to drill. Also, he does not want to tear up the walls with me. Due to the placement of a window in my basement, and a window in my room, running a wire is very easy. My basement window is straight below my window, with just another story separating my window, and the basement window. The siding in my house allows me to actually tuck the wire behind the siding all the way up to the height of my window. It then has to make a 6 foot shot across the side of the wall, where it reaches my window. This will also sit under siding, so it's protected from rain/snow, but not from the sun. This side of the house gets hit with the sun for about 4-5 hours every morning. Any tips on protecting something like this? That flexible rubber tubing seems good, or narrow conduit. I'm open for suggestions.

Now, for the plan. I decided that it will not be one shot from the router to my window, rather there will be couplers along the way for easy replacement. Dropping the line from the router to the basement is easy, because there is already an existing panel for the coaxial cable that comes through for my modem, I will just drop right down there. So I will run a line from the router, right into the basement, and then go from the basement to the window. There will be a coupler there, and the line will continue out the window and up the wall to my room. There will be a coupler inside my window, and then it will plug into my computer. So:

Router -> Basement -> Coupler -> Window -> Up the outside wall -> Window -> Coupler -> My computer.

The couplers will allow for easy replacement of the external cable if/when it fails. Also, should I use STP or UTP? STP is about twice as expensive, and I'm not sure it justifies the cost.

So the tl;dr of this:

1) Will this work?
2) How durable will it be?
3) Any tips on protecting the part exposed to the sun?
4) STP or UTP?

Thanks for taking the time to read this

Why not use powerline adapters? I use them in my house and get my full 20mbits through it.

I've read about them but I wish for gigabit. Backing up 640+gigs over the speeds power-line adapters offer is not appealing. Also, I'm not sure of how good their response times are. The entire project is going to cost me only about $50-$75 total + a free day, and that's the average price of a powerline adapter. But thanks for the suggestion.

thats about as fast as wireless, hes looking for speed.

deffinately should be good, but get something to cover it, conduit is best, or even some rubber hose, anything to protect it from the elements. And certainly try to get it sheilded too, cant hurt, and i dont know how much interference you might get by having it outside, might be none, might be more.

The couplers could prove problematic over time. Don't know how damp the basement is but the terminals could corrode. You should know you really don't want (possible but will probably be slow) the run to be more than 200 feet. If it is you will need to install a switch somewhere in the middle of the run.

I would use STP and run it with fish tape in the wall by the power outlets. This way you shouldnt have to tear up any walls or anything.

It should be fine unless you are running over 150-200 feet of cable.

Obviously conduit would be the "proper" way to do this, but since this needs to be a cheap and easy upgrade, I honeatly think it'll last. The cable will be fine for a long time. You may get cracking after a year+. Ive found cat5 cables left outside on a jobsite after what had to have been a year, and they work fine to this day. I think your plan is excellent, but I dont see where you're getting the $75 estimate. I forget exactly, but at home depot cat6 is maybe 25 cents a foot? Assuming you have the crimping tools and can buy non-terminated cables...

Cat 6 STP is worth it if you are running near wires that are power or something else. www.monoprice.com sells a lot of cables CAT 6 STP is cheap

I would just try using the cable alone and see how long it lasts. Maybe get one with good quality plastic shielding it.
