Little help on a $500 - $600 decent gaming build

Thread Starter
Good day everyone,

I have a buddy of mine at work that wants a new gaming computer with a budget around $500 (I told him it may be a little more and I think we have a buffer of about $100 so max $600). I put a design together a few months ago but other bills came up so he couldnt move forward, I figured because of the timeframe between designs it would be better to redesign it at this point, I also figured it couldnt hurt to reach out to my OCN folks and see what kind of genius you can come up with.

So here are the criteria
Need a full build sans monitor, keyboard, mouse (not sure about sound)
Current monitor resolution is 1400x900
Come as close to $500 as possible with a buffer zone of $100 so a max of $600
Usage as far as I know will be purely gaming and internet use, nothing too heavy on calculation

Try buying the old stock of things, like 9800gtxes. You won't get screwed in price and you can get away with some good deals. . I like browsing the for sale threads as well. Sometimes people have new products that they get on sale and list them below retail price. What type of performance are you looking for? Crysis or Counterstrike?

600USD in SGD is 850SGD.
So..

AMD Athlon II X2-255 + Asus M4A88T-M = $252SGD
Team Elite DDR3-1333 2x 2GB Kit = $153SGD
PowerColor HD4770 512MB GDDR5 = $115SGD
WD Caviar Blue 500GB = $65SGD
LG DVDRW = $31SGD
CoolerMaster Elite 341 case = $59SGD
Seasonic M12II 520W = $120SGD

Anything else I missed? =x

Cutting a little close to 600USD but yeah.

this leaves you with enough money for a decent monitor, unless he wants his current one. If a bigger monitor is desire and no games will be played, you could scrap the 9600GSO and use a the intel stock graphics

There is no HDD in that build.

Keep the monitor first. You won't be able to get much out of a new 1920 x 1080 reso monitor or something like that due to insufficient GPU power.

Anyways...

MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD Athlon II X3 440 CPU
--- $160

Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) RAM --- $68

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive --- $55

NZXT M59 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case --- $60

Antec EarthWatts EA-500D Green 500W PSU --- $70 ($20 off with promo code " antec500d")

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB GPU --- $160

Total Cost: $573 WITHOUT MIR AND PROMO CODES

Not sure if you're okay with spending $73 over your ideal $500 budget, but of course, if he wants a gaming rig, these are pretty much the bare essentials. Tri core CPU should be alright, motherboard is good for future CPU upgrades, such as to the new hexa core CPU's, GPU should max out anything you play at that resolution, 2GB of RAM is enough for a gaming rig, and that PSU supplies more than enough power for your entire rig.

With whatever money you can spare after this, buy yourself a keyboard and mouse which you like.

I like it, thats about what I came up with, what do you think about using a dual core phenom II instead of the athlon II tri core?
