Gaming build, medium budget - Page 2

I love my ASUS and it was pretty affordable.. Got my 750 to 4.0 on 1.3v with no troubles.

Also HAF 922 should be able to hold a 5870, I know the 932 does with no trouble if you can find a good price on one.

Your MOBO is 140 euro's here. Does it really have to be that expensive or will a MOBO half the price do?

I was looking at:

Asus P7P55D
MSI P55-GD65
MSI H55M-E33
Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
MSI P55M-GD45
MSI H55M-P31
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H
Asus P7H55-M
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
The one in OP.

etc. etc. etc.

I'm really confused.

ps. I might go for i7 860 if my budget allows it but first find a good mobo.

i would recommend staying with the P55-USB3 as it is a solid board, dont downgrade on your main components.

for a configuration i would recommend:

i5-750 (if your budget allows then an i7-860)

GA-P55-USB3 OR GA-P55-UD3

2x2GB Gskill Pi @ 2200mhz DDR3

Nvidia GTX470/ATi HD5870 (depending on which you prefer)

Samsung Spinpoint F3 or Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB X2 in Raid0

Corsair TX650/TX750/Silverstone Strider Series 650/750 Watt/Enermax 650/750 watt

Any Sata DVD Drive (they are all the same it doesnt matter)

NZXT Temptest EVO/Coolermaster Scout (if you dont mind cutting the Hard disk bays)/CM690 II Advance/HAF 932/Antec 902/Antec 1200/Fractal Define R2 (i have one and its excellent)

and if you have a little left over then buy a Corsair H50 for decent cooling of you cpu.

Hey, i would recommend keeping a P55 board in as it's most suited to the i5, allows for better overclocks. The downside with the GTX 470 is the noise and heat it produces, but it does give better tesselation performance in games etc. Also, if there's room in the budget, getting a few velociraptor hard drives can speed a system up pretty considerably. I think 2200MHz ram is a bit overkill as they can be pretty expensive for a good set, a good 1600MHz set can be overclocked to about 1800MHz.Antec 1200 or the Fractal design R2 are both awesome looking cases as well.

Ok great. Tomorrow I'll post a nice build including all your advice.
G.Skill ram isn't widely available here in my country so another brand will have to do. Any recommendations?

Thanks for your input! (Enjoy this REP+)

ps. I might stay with the i5 750 instead of i7 860 and/or drop down to 5850/5870. It seems neither of those would be bad choices so I'll let my wallet guide me.

i agree except the 2200mhz pi's are not as much as you would want to believe, i got mine for $165,, the GTX470 is actually fine with heat production and noise, its the 480 that has that problem.

a few velociraptors? those things are expensive and if you are on a budget of any kind i would recommend staying right away from those.

i would have to say, even if the ram isnt widely available in your country, ask someone here on ocn to buy a kit off newegg and ship them to you, or alternatively buy it off ebay.

if that cannot happen then i would have to say Corsair XMS3/Dominator or Team Xtreem Dark DDR3 Team Elite or Kingmax HyperX.

Just off hand that first Asus on your list P7P55D is X16 X4 on the PCI-E slots so it can't handle crossfire/sli . I wouldn't want to limit my options like that down the road. For a little extra there is a Pro version of it that will go X8 X8.(5870 might need the X16 though) Just something to look at whichever brand you go with.

I'd go 5850 and put the extra cheddar in the MOBO. Look for reference design on the Video Card whatever you get. I didn't and wish I had. 690 II is a pretty sweet case, I'd say in its price range its probably pretty hard to beat.

There is a used EVGA FTW in the for sale section with a real decent price tag on it. Since you said euro's though shipping might be a problem.

It looks pretty good! I would get 1600mhz g.skill or corsair dominator ram, no need for 1600+ unless you plan to do an overclock higher than 4.5ghz or so. I would stick with the 5870 for its price vs performance of the gtx 470. For the motherboard I would stay with the one in your op. For the cpu the i5-750 is great bang for your buck. The i7 860 would be a lot better if you want to shell out the money which at that point you might consider going to the 1366 platform with an i7 920/930.

The motherboards on 1366 start at 180 euro's so that may be a bit too much, I'd have to drop down on the GFX then.

I'll look for a new suitable 1600mhz set either G.Skill or Corsair. There are some G.Skill sets available but it's very limited.

About the MOBO. The Asus' lanes behave the same like the GA-P55-USB3 I believe. A board that goes x8x8 is more expensive most of the time. That's why I was thinking to switch to AMD. But since they offer much less performance...
Can you explain "reference design" please and why you recommend it?

As I said I'll post a build later this day including the input here, hopefully with some prices, as G.Skill isn't cheap here because of the limited supply.
