Recommendations / Is this a good Audio Setup?!

Thread Starter
Hey guys, trying to pull the trigger on something, tell me if you can come up with a better setup for the price:

- Set of Swan D1080MKIIs (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/565)
- Asus Xonar STX or Auzentech Prelude (can't decide, please help).

- Subwoofer will come at some point in the future but I do not need a recommendation now.

Total price will be 150 for the Swans, 180 for the soundcard = 330.

Is this a good setup guys? I listen to tons of music of all kinds except metal I guess (all flac). Also own a pair of HD555s that I would like to get some better sound out of, so this should be a consideration in the soundcard selection.

What do u think?

I'll tell you in a few days what I think of the ST coupled with HD600's, for some headphones perspective. Anyone know how the ST/STX sound through some nice speakers, though?

I think so. I've heard many great things about those Swans and have been wanting to purchase them for the past year.

Where are you getting them from?

I'd go for a USB DAC like the Musiland Monitor 02 over that Xonar any day. And it would prolly be cheaper.

Anyway, nice idea for a setup.

Interesting, I honestly think I would prefer a soundcard though, just to keep everything inside the case you know? What type of soundcard would you recommend?

Are the Swan D1080mkIIs a good idea?

again, I listen to tons of music of almost every kind (metal excluded) and game occassionally.

Looks like 1080s only have RCA inputs, so you might want to consider something that has RCA 2 channel inputs. The Asus Essence STX is $170 delivered on B&H Photo Video.

He'd be using the RCA outs, not the headphone outs for his speakers. I can see how an external DAC might be suggested if you are listening to headphones. The Musiland 02 in particular is a usb dac, and usb is a coaxial connection that's just as effected by EMI as RCA, the only difference is bit error correction at the receiving end. The Essence STX was designed for stereo playback in mind. The minijack headphone outs obviously aren't the greatest on the STX; the RCA stereo line-out has 70% greater noise rejection than the headphone outs on the STX.

You can see that a giant EMI shield is built around the RCA line-outs. In addition, there'd be less crosstalk due to separated channels.

I have heard that the xonar STX is perfect because it has those RCA outs, but will also do great because it has a built in headphone amp for my 555s!

thoughts?
