Yeah, they aren't very useful as speakers. But they are pretty useful as sound cards.

Spec wise it certainly has the best chance of doing a good job driving powered monitors.

Considering you still have a 160GB hard drive, I definitely think there are other concerns for your money

so, i've officially set up my essence st and i'm listening to some tunes through my hd600's. i'm using the headphone out with the gain set at 600 ohms, and the sound quality is pristine. still can't comment on speakers, but as far as how it will sound with the hd555's, i doubt you could get much better for an all-internal setup without modding.

edit: the gain setting is 300~600 ohms (extra high gain, it's called)

there's my settings

Well I hope so.

I ordered a pair last month and they deliver this week.

Honestly, any one of those would sound just fine--on par or better than the STX.

Plus there's the added advantage of using your DAC with your laptop on the go. Filter out the laptop buzz = WIN. You can't do that with a soundcard, can you?

They are great speakers. I had a pair for about a month and loved every single minute of them. Great sound for the price (which is why I bought them). My only complaint was it wasn't loud on max. My roommate had a pair of A5s in the same room and he could drown mine out like they weren't even their. I sent them back to The Audio Insider to get the 08's but they happened to be out so I am speaker less now.

Should get passives and a receiver or amp if monitors aren't doing it for you. Passive monitors don't usually carry around hefty amps on them (if they did they'd probably weigh 50lbs)
