Can u take a Amd turion x2 64 bit and put it into Desktop mobo?

I changed the topic so i would avoid creating a new thread.

The question is Would a AMD turion x2 64 bit work in a desktop mobo if so which would u suggest. and how would i cool it the contact is pretty small. Ive herd you can overclock the hell outta them cause there low wattage and low multiplyers.

I believe the processor is AMDx64 athlon but not 100% on that. Any tips suggestions are welcome Ohh its like 4 year old gateweay with an internal ati graphics card plays wow about 25-30 fps so its nothing horirble.

its going to be a media pc once i build my new one.

thank you."

I Dont see why not?

perhaps you would come into problems with the cmponents, some components are designed specifically for the laptop, and some might have to be connected to a battery etc.

but i dont think it will work

I thought about doing this one day as well. I was discouraged for a few reasons:

Laptop motherboards are not designed to be mounted in desktop cases, so you might have to custom-mod a case for mounting holes and standoffs.

Upgradeability--you're developing and building a desktop system that is essentially not upgradeable--beyond a few simple things.

System cooling--laptops are designed with an intricate heatpipe network for component cooling. If you want to upgrade your CPU cooling, you're limited to what else the stock cooler is also touching, so you might be left with stock.

GPU limitations. If you ever wanted to do anything more than watch standard-resolution Flash videos, you're screwed. I have an AMD Turion (1.8GHz single core) laptop that I was thinking to convert. But it totally chokes on 720p flash videos, and will NOT AT ALL play 1080p since it has an aging x300-based ATI video card.

I came to the conclusion that I was better off selling the laptop for whatever I could get for it and putting that towards some desktop system that I wanted to build.

maybe its worth just poping the chip out and buying an am2 board and ploppin some cheaper end memory in it. and like 9800 gt. after all im going to do is watch movies i download onmy tv. Atm it works alright i just figured if its gonna be stationary why not make it completely stationary and fix my heating issuses and up grade the harderive and such.

Can you put a amd turion x2 64 into a desktop motherboard? ive read a couple things where people say that you could overclock the hell outta them because of the low voltage.

I guess this is a little bump for you.

As far as I can recall, the pin layout for the turions is not the same as the desktop versions. For example, the "socket 939" versions are actually 940 pins--so you'd need a proper motherboard.

I'm pulling for you, but I'm afraid it's a losing battle, lol!

Turion X2 64 uses Socket S1, and to date I don't think there have been any desktop boards outfitted with this quite exotic socket. The most you could do is to try mounting the laptop board in a desktop case.

unfortunatley not unless you have a laptop motherboard like kz26 says.

its a different socket type.

it would be similar to trying to put an am3 cpu in an am2 only board

No

There's no desktop motherboard with the Socket S1 or S1G2. The only laptop CPU's that you could use in desktops that I know of were the Athlon XP-M chips and the ones that came after it.
