It depends on the models of the two drive in question, but generally larger drives provide better performance.

This is because the density of the larger drive provides more data per revolution of the platter (faster read / write sustained performance) and the tracks are closer together, meaning average seek to destination is often shorter, though that depends greatly on how the drive is configured and formatted.

If you formatted the 1TB as a single drive you could see a drop in the future as the drive fills up. You're better served with multiple drives, especially when dealing with large files like video transcoding.

A 1TB upgrade will definitely help you out and be much faster. Just don't get a 5400 or 5900 drive.

What are the models in question? If you have a 7200RPM 320GB drive but a 5400RPM 1TB drive, then it's not a good idea. See, we need to know the specs of both drives. If you haven't purchased the 1TB drive yet go for a Caviar Black.

Edit: The one above should be fine.

1TB drivers are definitely faster since theres more density per platter.
get the Samsung F3 or WD Black

I just saw the WD is more expensive so get the F3

Oh, so if you have a 1TB drive formatted as 2 500 GB ones, the speed will generally be faster? Asus split my laptop's drive into roughly 75 and 250, it's rather inconvenient but I might leave it like that if this is true...
