SSD first timer

I am going to get this drive for my first build and I have a few questions.
Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB

- Do I need to update the firmware before I install window 7, and if so how do I do this? (Guide/step by step would be great!)

- Is there anything I have to do to the SSD for games to run properly, or is it just like a regular HHD?

- My motherboard will be the ASUS P6X58D P, do I connect the SSD to the SATA 3gb or SATA 6gb port? (Does it matter or will it work same either way?)

- Any other infomation I need to know, I am a first time builder so anything and everything is much appriciated!

should be straight forward, you shouldn't have to do anything special for you games, connect it to 6gb port for future proofing incase speeds increase all though its probably max 3gb/s.

I am getting mine from Newegg as well. How do you check the firmware before you install the os, or can you?

You'll be better off on the Intel controller (3GB/s) - the drive isn't fast enough to flood it and the Intel Rapid Storage Driver that goes with it supports trim and performs better than the windows one (the only other choice with trim).

You may need to update the firmware, get it from intel (02HD is the latest), burn it to a disk, set mobo to IDE mode, plug SSD into port 1 (SATA0) and boot from the CD - it will tell you if you need to flash it. Switch to AHCI mode before you install windows - it gives better performance, especially with the Intel Rapid storage, get the latest one from intel.

You dont need to do anything special for games.

Yep, do the chipset/mobo drivers first then the Rapid Storage one. Win7 will be fine using its own until you get around to it.

The Intel Matrix storage drivers will help, but aren't absolutely necessary. To be honest, the whole procedure should be plug-and-play.
Plug in a spare Sata 3gbps or 6gbps port and make sure your boot configuration is set appropriately in your BIOS. Just install Windows 7, turn off Disc Defrag, and you are set.

My retail X25-M had the shipping firmware version printed on the label on the drive itself - not on the box.
