Win for baking motherboards

Thread Starter
I was just recently given a Dell D500 laptop by a friend, the motherboard was dead, one of the surface mount caps was blown and another was missing in the same area.

I found out that I can run a D600 motherboard or a 600m motherboard because they are the same size and configuration and they have ATi graphics.

So I bought a 600m motherboard off of ebay that needed a new DC jack, and would boot from the battery.

Got the motherboard yesterday and swapped DC jacks, problem though, it wouldn't boot. I tried contacting the person who I bought it from, but no answer oh well going to bake it I said.

385F in the oven for 10mins, I let it cool down to room temp, and everything works

$30 laptop with good battery FTW!

I'm guessing now that baking motherboards is confirmed, perhaps other dead PCB components can similarly be revived.

Some can, but it may only be temporary --example being the nVidia mobile graphics chipsets that have a tendency to separate from their laptop system boards.

The problem is in the solder type itself, so while it can be reflowed, the problem will eventually recur. HP also has had problems in the past with laptop mainboard components on some models overheating due to poor thermal design; once again, might be fixable, but it won't be permanent.
