Heh. I guess this is Pny's way of "getting rid of excess stock."

Seeing as you own the Palit card [on your sig], I guess you're the right person to ask since I was looking at this card on Newegg and seems to have a decent cooler. When you said All 465's, did you mean just from Palit? or from ALL companies?

Basically, from what I am understanding so far in the few hours I've been looking into this, all 465's are guaranteed to unlock the shaders [through that mysterious software from ASUS [?] ] if nothing else, though the software can be quite picky with some 465's.

The 10 memory chips are just a "bonus" to unlock, so to speak...or are 10 chips actually required to do this unlock method?

Is NVFLASH the "safest" way to do this if this software doesn't work?

If you didn't understand anything that I just said, don't worry then. I guess all I'm trying to ask is: if I buy the Palit 465 card, will it be guaranteed to have the 10 chips?

I meant all companies use the same PCB on the 465 as they would with their 470. Check newegg, the Galaxy 465GC and the 470GC are identical, and the same can be said for the Palit 465 Dual fan and the 470 dual fan. The only thing different in the cards is the ramchips, caps and the GPU.

With the 465_upgrade software from Asus, it's still lottery I'm afraid, but if you do get a Tenchip model, you're guaranteed to unlock through biosflashing. There are only a few brands known, as mentioned above. POV and PNY seem to disguise 470's to be peddled off as 465's most often.

To tell you the truth, I havent looked into it. You could refer to this thread for further reading.

Particularly NCspecV81's posts.

If you feel like playing the lottery, sure. But chances of that happening are probably lower than 25%.

You are wrong, only reference models unlock cores (Palit is the only non-reference 465 right now )
Asus software just unlock good cores , if they are defective cores they will not unlock( i have seen 1 card that unlocked to 416 cores instead of 448)
The 10 chips is not a "bonus", if it has 8 chips you got a 465 and unlock it you got little more powerful 465 but if you got a 10 chip version and BIOS flash it you got a GTX 470 for less money.

No, you don't get a 10 chip Palit since they don't use reference board.
465 reference board = 470 reference board
465 non-reference board = 465 non-reference board

465 reference board = 470 reference board
465 non-reference board = 465 non-reference board
Well, this surely clear things up for me. I guess I'll just save for a PNY if money decides to blow my way.

I just hope I'm not too late by then.

@ Kand: I will definitely read up on this. Thanks.

Wrong.

465 non-reference board = 470 non reference board.

465:

My 465. Wow. Dusty already. That's what I get for cleaning the case out after installing the card. ~_~

470:

See. Similar? Only difference should be the final GPU core(GF100-275-A3 for the disguised 470's and GF100-030-A3 for the "true" 465's.), the number of ramchips, and the caps opposite the ramchips on the back.

Maybe im wrong but i haven't seen a Palit 465 with unlocked core, maybe its the board or maybe the bios.

Well. I have yet to flash my card into a reference bios for use with the "465_upgrade" tool from Asus. Though definitely, I wont be flashing into a 470 bios expecting a drastic transformation as the card I purchased comes with only 8 ramchips. (Note the blank spots where capacitors should be on the 465.)

Yes, but you won't be able to take full advantage of the unlocked cores if you only have 8 DRAM chips. So my statement still holds. Not all PNY GTX 465 can be fully unlocked to GTX 470 (because some of them lack the physical connection to install the additional 2 DRAM chips).

If you do get a 10 DRAM chip board, good for you.

That one card you are talking about is probably mine. There wasn't anything wrong with the cores, something went wrong while using the tool. After I flashed to a full 470 all 448 cores are there. The card is perfectly stable as well.
