What is the best way to destroy a sata hard drive without causing any physical damage?
post #2 of 45
why are you trying to do this?

Anyhow, Nuke the HDD

A plasma cutter or oxyacetylene torch with a cutting head on would be sweet destruction.

The best way is quoted in a song.

Stop. Hammertime. Sorry there's not much of a non-destructive way

Superheat it! In an Oven, but then the exposed PCB will melt aswell. Try this, start formatting it and when it's halfway done, yank it out. Might need to repeat that a couple of times.

http://www.dban.org/

It's what i use.

Be warned though;

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

Are you trying to erase the data or render the drive inoperable without being able to physically tell?

Use it while in a lightning storm with no power bar attached to the computer.

Best way I've found to destroy harddrives without physically bashing them in. I can't count how many windows installs, IDE controllers and PCBs I've fried in this manner...accidentally...through power bars...

Plug a car battery to it. It will kill the drive with only a couple "Burn marks"

Best thing to do is to simply use a screw driver and drill holes in it.

EDIT Microwave is the best one so far
