Intel Matrix Raid 5

Thread Starter
I'd like to add a bit of redundancy to one of my arrays, currently 2x 1TB WD Caviar Blacks. Thinking of adding in a third and converting the array over to Raid 5 through Intel Matrix Raid.

The question here is, is this a good idea? I know IMR isn't this highest quality of Raid controllers. Is using it for Raid 5 going to simply overload it and cause a performance hit or some multitude of problems or can I expect fairly smooth/fast operation?

Anyone have any experience with this?

The ICH is actually a very good host-based controller.

Is this RAID5 for storage only? The problem with RAID5 is the write performance due to parity calculations. If the data is write once, read many... then it will be ok.
Once again...

Well, currently the array is partitioned into 2 logical drives:

1 for applications, Virtual Machines, etc. etc. - so not much writing going on here, but significant read operations

And the other as "temporary" storage - I deal with various (yes, legal) video encodes which involves a large amount of torrenting, DDL, etc. etc. However, my connection downloads at 2.4mb/s MAX - and the drive would be transferring the data to a USB external when it was done. So as long as I'm looking at (hopefully a lot more) than 2.4mb/s write and 28mb/s read I shouldn't be bottlenecked by the array at all.

For those applications, you would be fine.

Using for OS boot is not a good idea..

I'd still go with a 4-drive RAID-10 configuration. Or with Intel Matrix RAID, a mixed RAID-10/RAID-5 configuration....

Unfortunately I've filled the controller.
6 ports total - 1 ssd, 3x black and 2x cd drives.

The only way to get another drive in there would be to switch the cd drives over to the jmicron controller (which is currently being used for e-sata) or to add another controller in.

Kind of stuck on 3 drives.

How often do you use the optical drives, like, REALLY use them?

You could move one of the optical drives to external USB... specifically one that is used mostly for read operations, for example... That's what I'd do...

I bought a slim external USB DVD writer for that same reason. I'm tired of putting optical drives into systems so I can load an OS. I don't store data on them, and rarely need to use the drive once the system is built..
