iPhone 3GS activation and cancellation fee??

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

Well, I'm not sure if some of you have heard this, walmart is selling iPhone 3GS 16gb for only $97, YES NINETY SEVEN DOLLARS

Well, only problem is that I don't like AT&T.
I have several questions. (Mainly for iphone users)
1. Is it possible to activate the phone by yourself for free?
2. Is the cancellation fee actually $325?
3. Is it possible to unlock the iPhone 3GS by myself with free tools?

THank you so much.

1. Yes, I believe so. You might need to jailbreak it though.
2. Yes, prices went up.
3. Yes, google it.

Ok, since activation is my main problem, does it mean jailbreak first then activate??

The reason for the cancellation fee is because they're offering the phone at a discounted price, and because even AT&T is going to be selling the 3GS for $99 when the 4G comes out, so that the 4G can take over the 3GS's price points ($199/$299). Hence, the $97 from Walmart is only a $2 savings over what AT&T will soon start selling the units for (with a 2 year contract). Buy just the phone (no contract)? And the price used to be as high as $600.

In terms of activation, you won't get an iPhone from Walmart (or AT&T) for $97 that isn't activated (as far as I know). Port the number out after the activation, and you get hit with the cancellation fee.

Your best bet is to wait for 4G to come out and keep your eyes out here -- there should be some people (possibly myself) that may be getting a 4G when they come out and may have a 3GS for sale that would be comparable to an activated price @ Walmart/AT&T..

^ Oh right, bernie is correct about the activation. It will be activated when you buy it. I was thinking about if you got it off ebay, and iTunes asks you if you want to activate it about 5 times before giving you the option not to.

actually, the $99 iphone 3gs after iphone 4g comes out is only 8gb
the $97 one right now is 16 gb
so basically, the iphone that i buy from walmart should be already activated and ready to use?? and then i just cancel it within a month and be charged $325.

i was going to buy one off craigslist, but most of them are used(not unlocked) and are priced higher than $400. I would rather pay $425 for a new one and then unlock it.

1-I don't think they let u walk out with the phone without activating it with AT&T frst. :/
2- No idea.
3- If it is on the odler software. (anything but 3.1.3 I believe) yes. Or, u could wait till after iPhone 4 gets released then there is supposed to be a hack.

That's right I don't think you can unlock the 3Gs yet. But like previous poster said It might be OS version specific.

1. Anyone can activate an iPhone, IF they have a AT&T SIM card.
2. For the cancellation fee you have to talk to AT&T they set the cancellation fee. If i remember correctly they charge a fee for cancellation + some amount for the resting Months left on the contract. Once again you have to talk/see AT&T contract.
3. as of right now you can Unlock an iPhone that is on any firmware below 3.1.2. the current firmware that is out for the 3gS is the 3.1.3, what apple did after the 3g (second gen iPhone) is that Now the 3GS has to contact Apple every time it wants to restore and get a "signature" from Apple that allows you to restore. You will have to wait for the new iphone 4 to come out along with the firmware at some point after the release the DEV team (iPhone Hackers) should be releasing a Jailbreak and Unlock for the New Firmware 4.0 (HOPEFULLY)

Hope this answers you question.
feel free to ask away...
