Getting my first DSLR

Thread Starter
Alright, I'm a photography student, and for an upcoming course, I need a DSLR. I've been using a Fujifilm s1500, and how I hate that camera. Blurry, shaky, you need a tripod, has worse picture quality than my old 5.0mp Cybershot from '02, and more noise than a Dethklok concert. A DSLR is required for the class, and I can put it off no longer.

I mainly shoot Macro/closeups, and wide angle/architecture photography.

Cameras I am considering:

Olympus E-620, and E-30
Nikon D80, D90, D300, and D5000

I'm a total noob on lenses, what would be a good lens for the kind of shooting I do?

Features I would like:
A top LCD displaying the status, like on the E-30 or D300
Good picture quality
Not crazy expensive

1000D has good picture quality and is very good value, not sure what "A top lcd displaying the status" is. Got mine with 18-55 IS lense for £300 - no regrets whatsoever.

Perhaps stick with the kit lense for now and move on when you've got to grips with it? Thats what I'm trying to do anyway.

EDIT:
Actually that last bits a lie, I'd buy a 70-300 in a flash if I had the money

Olympus is no good with wides, they have a 2x crop factor so you need 8mm lens on 43rds to get 16mm 35mm equivalent. only the higher end cameras have top screen LCD so you are basically looking at a canon 50d/7d or nikon d90/d300(s) or pentax k7.

I like my Sony 330a, but out of the list you have I know the Nikon D5000 is good. I would also look for a Nikon D40, usually around $400 or less. A bit older, but it's a solid performer.

You should really define what "crazy expensive" entails.

But from the cameras you listed, the D90 and the D5000 are pretty good cameras in their class. iirc the D90 has the top lcd you want

I have a Canon 50D, but I noticed that Canon isn't on your list. Nikon would be my preference over Olympus if I were in your shoes.

I had a 30D which can be had for $400 or less now, and it is a great camera. Solid body and has a top LCD

d80, d90, d300 has the top lcd u are talkin about.

d5000, d3000, d60, d40 does not.

i have the d5000 and i actually prefer it showed on LCD vs the "top lcd" for the info. everything done on 1 screen. convienent imo.

jumpin to a dslr is already gonna give u a great picture quality over a point and shoot.

lenses u could consider is like a 60mm macro and either like 11-17mm tokina f/4 or 12-24 nikkor f/4. considering u are doing architecture which means u are generally shooting outside. having a constant aperture and having the natural light outside from the sun, either of those two super wide angle lenses should be good.

I think you should go canon. The canon 30D is a great option with a top lcd that can be had for cheap. But if you had the money, go for the 50D.

EDIT: if you do go canon and want a cheap lens for you current needs, I suggest the 18-55 kit lens, and not the 28-135mm kit lens. The 18-55 is a fine kit lens and I really think it is alot sharper than the 28-135mm.
