Worth upgrading q6600 3.7ghz to i7-875k?

Thread Starter
I am running my q6600 at 3.7 currently, can probably do 3.8 with better TIM.

I am thinking of buying a i7-875k from microcenter.

The main reason I want to do this is because I want to rip blu rays and create MKV's.

Will this speed up my ripping and encoding time by a good amount?

It will save you a decent amount of time. But I dont think its ideal to get a whole new computer just to do a job that will be done in a couple of days. Is there a deadline for these blu-ray ripping youre doing?

I can rip and reencode to mkv in about 12 hours for a typical blu ray currently.

I would like to speed up the process so it doesnt take me as long, also I game (so i cant rip blu rays and game at the same time) so Im wondering how much faster say a i7-875k at 4 ghz would be.

It is faster. You would notice a nice increase in fps in games too.

I'm on the fence about getting one of those before they go off sale as well.

Save your money and just get an i7 860. The i7 875k is a complete waste of money as you'd be hardset to find an 860 that can't do 4ghz.

It supports Hyper Threading for 8 Logical cores so it should speed up encoding times no end.

I'd say go for it, if you have the cash.

PS nice Q66 overclock

Don't listen to that they are the same price at microcenter.

I can get the i7-875 for a little over 200 bucks though.... would you still recommend getting the i7 860?

Oh, if you have other reasons to upgrade than I see no reason why not to get the i7 875. Go for it.
