Need Suggestions for Intel Build

Thread Starter
Ive been thinking about using some money this summer to finally bring my computer out of the lga 775 age. My case and psu are pretty amazing, so im not looking to upgrade that yet, and my two 9800gt' in sli works pretty well. I pretty much have my heart set on a i7-930, but need the accompanying motherboard, ram, cooler, ect. I want to the price relatively low ($350-450 for mobo and ram), but not low quality. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Sorry, just edited budget into intial post. It just seems there are so many choices for motherboard and ram, and thats where im getting stuck.

Dual 16x pcie on the mobo is a must, but im having trouble narrowing it from there. Concerning ram, I was looking at some cheap cas 9 1600 mhz ram, but will it even be a noticeable decrease if i choose 1066/1333?

Also, how well implemented are the software overclocking utilities that come with mobos? Do they allow full control over everything? Do you find yourself still doing the majority of ocing in the bios?

The ASUS P6X58D-E is popular: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-641-_-Product

The PCI-e runs in 16/16/1 or 16/8/8, not sure if that will kill it for you. Otherwise the board I have is pretty nice.

Gigabyte X58A UD3R:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-423-_-Product

As far as ram goes, the higher the frequency the less it will limit your overclock. If you don't plan on OCing, just stick with 1333 ram. If you are OCing get a good set of 1600 so you don't get limited by ram. Try to get low voltage ram (1.65v) and lower cas will be more beneficial than faster frequency.

I have the P6X58D-E and love it so far. Look here for more info on it. http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...-e-thread.html My first time overclocking and it is pretty straight forward in the bios. Haven't messed with any software based overclocking stuff.

This is the cheap RAM I went with. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211451. So far (3.8 w/ht on) it hasn't let me down. Ran it at spec. Underclocked it and tightened the timings up real tight. Worked both ways. I let it back out to stay out of the way while I pushed the clock up and haven't tried tightning them back up yet so we'll see but so far its looking like good stuff for the price.

Thats a ridiculously cheap price at Microcenter for that 930. Good find.

I've never tried it but the timings look pretty good for the price. Make sure it is listed on the Quality Vendors List (QVL) of whichever motherboard you get.

That new Evga ftw3 motherboard looks promising: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...VGA-_-13188065
For ram gskill and corsair are top notch: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231225 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145224
The dominator will go over your buget, but corsair is a very good company. For the cooler I would get an h50 with push/pull gentle typhoon fans. For a hard drives westerdigital 500/640gb blacks are very good, if you want an ssd the intel 80gb is a great option.

Right now, a good start to narrowing down your choices is to decide if you need USB3.0 and SATA3. If you do, you'll at least have no more choices than you can put on your hands and feet.
