PC won't boot after installing new media storage drive

Thread Starter
Alright so run into a little snag here... I am trying to setup a last minute media pc and it had windows 7 installed on it already. I took the 2TB hard drive from my main rig and put it in via sata connection. Now it wont boot and windows 7 repair doesn't seem to fix it. But if i take out the 2TB data drive it boots fine. what da eff!? I am kind of a noob though when it comes to understanding how windows 7 sets up it's booting info as i already cant remove a empty drive from my main rig without that being unable to boot now either. Really appreciate it if someone can fill me in or point me in the right direction as to how to fix this stuff or understand it better.

Thanks in advance!

Is your boot drive running on a S-ATA connection or IDE?

I assume that the new 2TB drive is running on S-ATA, right?

In that case, if your boot is running on IDE, shift the jumpers over to 'Cable Select'.

If the two drives are S-ATA then make sure you connect them into the right ports.
I.E, don't go connecting random S-ATA ports, try to make them sequential etc.

You say it won't boot... In this sense, does it simply not load Windows or does the PC not even start?

Try going into the BIOS and see if they can find your hard drive among the devices.

Does the other (2 TB) drive have an OS installed on it too?

The PC will start up, but just as it shows the windows 7 loading screen it restarts.

Everything is running off a SATA connection.

The BIOS only sees the original drive on the media pc as it's booting up.

The 2TB drive was only formatted in my main rig. No windows install on it. strictly data.

If that secondary 2TB was in your main system when the OS (for the main system) was installed, it may contain additional boot / active / system partition markers. Does your main system still boot with the drive removed? (Just to confirm).

If so, I would try connecting the drive back to the main system, going into Disk Management, and then deleting any and all partitions on that spare 2TB before you move it to the MCE PC.

When you connect the 2TB drive up, you should also double-check in BIOS that the right drive is selected - your boot order may change if the SATA connection you used is a higher priority than the one used by your existing HDD.

Yes my main rig still boots fine with the 2 TB removed.

The 2 TB drive was just recently put in my machine only to be formatted and transfer media onto while we waited to get the media pc put together. So you think i need to delete all of that and re transfer the data back to it? and you are saying that there is a order to the sata connectors on my mobo?

The mce pc doesnt really see the 2 tb drive in BIOS.

OH. BIOS doesn't see the 2TB drive eh?

Does the BIOS see the 2TB drive constantly if you unplug the power to the existing SATA boot drive? Trying to determine if you might be having a PSU issue... maybe a busted SATA port, or bad cable

Okay... what about booting the system with just the 2TB powered...? Does the BIOS see it (consistently)?

No. Not at all actually... could the mobo not be compatible with a drive that large? the board is a Asus A8V-E Deluxe. it's a fairly old motherboard (3-4 years?). I'm thinking maybe a BIOS update? Even though the ones i looked at never mentioned adding larger drive support :/
