I'm flying a little blind here as I haven't used Mandriva since it was Mandrake and haven't had an ATi card since ISA cards but until someone using both comes along this might help. The only 3 problems I can see you've probably noticed too, quoted below.

Code:
X.Org X Server 1.6.5
Release Date: 2009-10-11
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux_2.6.27.45-server-1mnb Mandriva

Before reporting problems, check http://qa.mandriva.com
to make sure that you have the latest version.

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed to open the DRM

(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
(EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed

Going backwards since the last error is usually the deal breaker I am a little confused because font problems usually aren't the cause of a total fail. However it is odd that you are getting the iso8859-14 issue since even though that is Latin/Celtic it should be supported at kernel level. It isn;t even listed with either EE or WW so I have to ask are you sure you copied the entire log? It's unusual to stop there as I doubt that is the cause of the break.

Direct Rendering is another matter. It is required to be disabled by nVidia who supplants their own but it could be the deal breaker for ATi. Sorry I can't say more at this point but Googling for those lines should turn up something good.

I assume you know you can get into X if you have to by editing xorg.conf. to use the "radeon" or "vesa" driver temporarily, right?

BTW Great you boot to runlevel 3 but what do you use to get to X? "startx" , "xorg" "startkde", "xdm", "gdm", "kdm":....what?

I've been using startx, as its always worked prior to the driver install.

I'll post my xorg config pre/after driver install too if that will help.

It can be worthwhile to try as many different ways and apps to get into X as possible because each will have a different set of error messages in the terminal for certain and sometimes in Xorg.0.log.

BTW I'm glad you're using 10.5 as your odds are probably better and undoubtedly will work the best once you succeed, that is until ATi releases a newer one. Despite some FUD to the contrary from what I read AMD/ATi is pretty committed to catching up to nVidia and surpassing if they can. It's just that AMD is newer to the game. Thankfully since they bought out ATi they filled an important gap in ATi, decent coders. It used to be ATi made good hardware but couldn't code a bread recipe. That has changed dramatically even though it isn't yet evident in Linux.

Ok, so I found that when i switch the xorg.conf file to use "fglrx" thats what causes the issues.
When i switch it to use "radeon" it works, but there are no desktop effects or anything.

Glad you had the cojones to just go for it and that it all panned out. What made you choose Debian?

I took that "which linux distro is for you" test. It suggest that i'd try openSuSE, Mandriva, Debian. My friend said debian was really good too, so I just went with it. So far no problems
