New CPU, MOBO, and RAM - Page 2

Hey guys, thanks for the input so far! Anyways, I already have a Xigmatek ST-1283 cooler and if I went i5/i7 I planned to get a bracket mounting kit for that.

However, I recently tried install the ST-1283 onto an AM3 motherboard with a 1090T and the ST-1283 blocked the first two RAM slots on the particular Asus motherboard. So my question is, what kind of cooler fits AM3 without blocking the RAM slots on those boards?

Also, just for kicks, it's a possibility I may be willing to spend the extra ~$150 to go i7 LGA-1336. So, if that were the case what parts would you guys pick?

I know LGA-1336 socket is in limbo and that AM3's bulldozer may support AM3 which might just make AM3 a more attractive option for future proofing.

What are your thoughts?

Alright guys, I've decided on going i7.

What do you guys think of this board and will an LGA-775 backplate on it?

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R

No an LGA 775 backplate will not work.

And unless you're planning on doing video encoding, I'd go with the i5 750.

Yeah, it's just seems that overclocking the i5-750 seems to be a mixed bag for most, some will hit 4Ghz, some won't.

But true, the more I think about, I don't really need an i7...

If it's a 775 backplate, and it won't match up to the holes of the 1366 board unless it's one of those backplates that have shiftable screws like the U12P. Or if the motherboard has the extra holes, like the P6T. The UD3R is a 1366 board and has the 1366 holes only, so it won't fit.

You should either buy the P6T, or buy a new heatsink.

Do you live in the USA near a major city/ Microcenter?
Grab and i7-920/930 there for sub $200
Or else on buy.com for $220
$170 for ram (6gb) or else more like 70 dollars for 3 gb (FS threads)
That leaves you ~200 dollars for a motherboard, totaling 590.
check the FS threads or open box specials and I think you can make it...
