3DM06 2x HD4870 vs 2x HD5850 - What The?

Thread Starter
Alright, so over the weekend I finally got around to benching my Skulltrail system with my new pair of HD5850's in Crossfire.

I ran 3dmark06 and 3dmark vantage, and 3d06 came out to 17349

Before when I was running my 2x HD4870 512mb cards, my top score in 3dm06 was 18350:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=13498980

I changed NOTHING as far as my CPU/RAM config/clocks go, only switched out the GPU's and updated my drivers to the newest cat's

Can anyone help explain this? I thought that 2x 5850's would be far superior to 2x 4870's... my aim is to hit 20k with my current processors (2x 5420 Xeons @ 3.0ghz)

Nope

The HD5870 has almost double the resources in every department, and a reordered cache structure.

Also:

HD4870
800SP

HD5870
1600SP

double the sheer shading power (though the execution pipeline is a tad bit less efficient)

EDIT: did you enable crossfire?

Thats odd. And what bradey isnt true. My 5850 already outperformed my 4890 by miles!

Use driversweeper in safe mode to sweep the drivers and reinstall them. Then rerun 3DMark Vantage

What were your separate CPU and GPU scores?

'06 is more demanding in the CPU area than vantage as far as I am aware. What were your scores in Vantage for the 2?

EDIT: Also, have you run actual game benchmarks?

w/ my cpu and gpu OC/ed i score about 26k.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=12460078

My transition setup (e8400 +5850) scored 18k http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=12249528

In actual games, my 5850 stock is about as fast as a 4850x2.
