I'm new to Crossfire (HD 5850)...Things I need to know thread

Thread Starter
Hi, I just installed my first Crossfire Setup...
The Thing is my 4.3 Ghz Stable Overclock is not stable anymore with a second reference HD 5850.

I have:
-Sapphire HD 5850 (Reference)
-Biostar HD 5850 ( Reference)

Both cards are exactly the same
Both BIOS are different

Should I flash both card to a Certain Bios, whatever could be the best HD 5850 BIOS

Should I redo my whole overclock or there are some settings that I need to modify in the BIOS..

My Computer was stable with those settings, and now I always BSOD after a couple of minutes...not even in game., what should I change and will I be able to verclock both cards?

Code:
Target CPU Frequency 4294MHz
Target DRAM Frequency 1636MHz

If you didn't have a 950w.. I'd say it was your psu ... adding the new load might have pushed it just over the egde..

So your CPU was stable with only 5850 in?

I would lower the voltages and CPU fequency a tad bit. Like around 4.0-4.1, something you know is absolutely stable.

If it still BSOD, it could due to the mismatching BIOS.

Take out the second reference 5850 and see if you still get the BSOD

It is summer and the extra heat coming from the second 5850 could definitely affect the CPU temps

The second card could be stressing an unstable part of the cpu that isn't stressed much with only one card or stress tests, up the voltage or low the overclock I say.

edit: Put both of the cards in one at a time, maybe one is unstable.

its not temp, everything is water cooled with 2xfeser radiator, CPU max temp Linx Stable is 67'C, 1000Mhz Core/1300Mhz memory is around 40'c at full load (60'c VRM)

Both Card work well alone

I tried with stock clocks and it still do the same thing so its not the Power Supply...There must be a problem

update the BIOS. There are plenty of guides out there; I think you have the capacity to do it yourself

Sometimes when you add extra cards it puts more strain on the northbridge. Try raising your IOH core voltage a notch or two. If that doesn't help, try giving your cpu more juice. What you're describing is not that uncommon ... usually it can be solved with a bit more voltage to one of those two parts.

Also, leave your graphics cards at stock while you work this out, just to eliminate variables.

heres a guide for flashing the bios:

http://www.overclock.net/ati/671675-...5850-bios.html

However the bios should not be causing issue (i ran mismatched bios for months before flashing)..... did you reinstall the drivers after installing your second card?
