Internet speed

Thread Starter
I have cox internet and my download speed should be 1M per second. I've done a couple of internet speed tests and the download speed comes out as 850ish kbs.

The problem is that when I actually do a download, with IE or FF, it shows that it is downloading only 100kbs.. pretty slow.

If its a problem on my part then please let me know but if not I'll give them a call. I hate talking to them so I hope its an easy fix

Some websites have bandwidth limitations which would explain why sometimes downloading takes longer than what your regular speed allows. I wouldnt worry to much about it. Try downloading from multiple sources to see if its consistent or not. If it is, then it could be your part; if its not, its probably just the website.

It is the same on my 2 PC's and also on my laptop. I've done tons of downloads not realizing it because I figured that since I was paying for the cheap package that I was suppose to get that speed. But nope, suppose to be 1M.

I've done ton's of downloads over a long period of time and they all average out at 100kbs. Some times it will go up to 200 and then back down but that happens rarely.

80%-90% of advertised speeds is not uncommon not everyone gets 100%. If your in Win XP tweaking RWIN may help.

I believe you are confusing Mb/s to MB/S which are two different things

Mb= mega bit and MB =Mega Byte

8 mega bit = 1 mega byte (oops correction here)

If your internet connect says 1.5mbps for example

That means: 1500 kilobits per second which is actually a maximum download speed of 187 Kilobytes per second

RWIN?

Also, my laptop has Win7.

I realize that I probably won't get the advertised speed but hell, 900kbs off?? Brought to my attention when I was on someones computer that has the same package as me.

I may just have to give them a call tomorrow

Router settings setup properly? You could reset that and the modem if you haven't already. I think that is right if Im seeing that correctly. You said 1mb internet? 100k= 1000kbs=1mb, so your dl speeds are correct.

Thank you, now I need to get a better package lmao. For some reason on my friends computer it actually says 1mbps or 1.5mbps while he is downloading. I got confused

This. Internet companies generally advertise speeds in mega bits per second.

Try torrenting a major Linux distro like the latest Ubuntu. That should max out your connection and remove server-side slowness.
