How much power do I need?

I went to calculate the wattage I need for a build I am planning but skeptical so if you guys can tell me how much wattage I need to run this setup, appreciated.

500w at the very most.. I can't remember if the gtx 280 uses more power then the 5870, but a higher end c2d with a 5870 maxed out a 380w.

THe reason I got confused is because the website says:
Minimum of a 550 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 40 Amp Amps.)

An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector and an available 8 pin PCI-E power connector
