The stupidest thing I've ever done was pencil mod my first EVGA 780i with the PC running with an alumimum mechanical pencil, there was a pretty blue light a loud crack and I got a bit of a shock and the PC shut down all at the same time...all I could say was opps, because I was steading my hand by resting my palm on my ram.

Thank god for the Corsair 750tx it saved me from my own stupity.

Didnt even realize I was using a metal pencil till two days later.

Didn't plug the 4 or 6 pin power in the top right of motherboard, took 3 hours trying to figure out why it would start up and not display anything on my screen, even sent back my 4850 and had to wait 3 days for it to be returned with a new, then finally realised where that last cable went and everything started working.

fried my old motherboard when trying to put it into the case. didn't put it on top of the screws to keep the bottom from touching the metal part of the case. Just put it in and used zip tie to secure. Plugged everything in and turned on the power then boom! ceiling light goes out and smokes coming out of the case.

It was an old 486 or something and I was about 10

I was building an AM2 rig, the MOMENT it was completed I was full of that usual joyful feeling (the feeling you get when you're about to fire up your new machine). I reach over to hit the power button, fired it up, knocked my cup of water off the desk, water went straight into top fan, sprayed all over, fried motherboard.

After installing the waterblock on my GTX470 and booting the PC, I hear beeping but got no video display. My heart sank as I quickly jumped to the conclusion that I had fried the card by incorrectly installing the block. I took out the GPU, reinstalled the block and then realized I hadn't connected the power connectors the entire time.

I didn't enable the PCI express slot for the 8800gt in the bios, but instead enabled the PCI slot for the add on GPU. Spent countless hours trying to understand why the card would work on every other MB. And then even more time trying to understand why the onboard GPU didn't work after the bios started. Even went as far as to get a different power supply and case. LOL good times.

Accidentally sticking my pinky into an ultra kaze while trying to cram a wire though an mATX desktop case...

The fan took the top of my finger off and a lot of blood, what's funny is I didn't feel it until I looked at the wall and saw red liquid dripping down.

My old AMD stock cooler had ok temperatures but was terribly loud, so I bought a cheap Rosewill one off Newegg.

I spent about 2 hours trying to get it to hook on right. I'd keep taking it off and reapplying TIM to the CPU (first mistake) and eventually I got it so the clip was secure, but on wrong. I booted it up and saw 80C idle temps. Eww, at least though it was finally quiet.

Fast forward a few months, new CPU. I take off the cooler and clean off the TIM and realize there was a BLUE SHEET OF PLASTIC on the bottom that I never took off! *ultra facepalm* that plus the terrible TIM application and I'm surprised my 7850 didn't die.

Replaced the CPU and did the TIM correctly, still had trouble with the bracket, but when I booted I got a great 30C idle...much better. Overclocked 675MHz and its still cool. Not too bad for a cheap Rosewill cooler attached incorrectly!

Ran a Core i7 and GTX 470 on a generic 380 power supply.

Ended with a bang!
