You could use some fiberglass or bondo as a medium for a mod. Requires some sanding and painting afterward tho.

I was thinking about cutting the mesh out and putting like a acrylic panel?

I could see a smoked acrylic looking good. Although finding a way to allow air to pass through or around it would be the key.
Another idea would be using a clear acrylic and paint the back side.

Could design some sort of a pattern that would allow air flow, then use a dremel to cut it out. If you wanted to spend the money you could have a machine shop use a CNC mill or maybe a engraving shop cut the pattern. I have no idea what that would cost though.
