Ati 4870x2 Vs 5770 Crossfire

Thread Starter
hi i previously owned an ati 4870x2 but it had to be sent back for repairs/replacement a few months back. after a long wait i was told it could not be fixed sad face :-( anyway they offered me a ati 5570 as a replacement not to bad of an outcome. but the 4870x2 performance is far superior to that of an 5770 and i was wondering if i was to crossfire a pair of 5770 would i get equal or more performance than my 4870x2. i also know the 5770 is newer and has dx 11 and all that stuff. please help me i also bought a new Asus P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard because the motherboard i have now has only 1 pci express slot.

2 HD4870s = roughly HD5850
i sold my 2 4870s for a 5850 (well i killed one of the 4870s - sold the other)

5770s scale very well in crossfire - like 93% extra performance or something - very well.

A P5Q mobo is a P45 chipset - not the best for crossfire but its ok.
a X38/X48 chipset board is better for crossfire - but it should be ok.

But yes - dual 5770a is a fast combination.......much faster than a 4870x2

I sold my 4870x2 to get 5770 CF. The V2 coolers are very cool and they are VERY silent.
I remember hearing the crazy vacuum cleaner sound every time I was playing games, now I can mostly just hear the air pretty much silently going through my case.

People say the 5770s are between a 4870 and a 4890 so I'd say it would be a sidegrade in performance, but an upgrade with the DX11 support.

ok thank you for your reply i had to buy the Asus P5Q Pro Turbo because it was the only new motherboard on ebay and i didn't want to upgrade my ram and cpu.

Also, please don't accept a single 5770 as a replacement, ask for your money back or ask for two 5770s. With one you would get ripped off. You should at least get a 5850.

That's pretty sad. I guess your best bet would be purchasing another 5770 and CF like you already thought, since one just wouldn't be enough and they don't cost that much either.

Dont go for 5770 for 4870X2, If your Gigabyte 4870x2 is under warranty then ask them to give you in writen that they cant repair the product nor can provide equvalient.

Tell them that you will take this matter to the consumer forum.
This trick worked for me.

My ASUS A8N-sli gone bad and ASus want me to go for M2N68. But after this trick i got M2N-SLI 32 as replacement.

Ask for a 5850, and then grab another one of those for crossfire(if you must).

The 4870X2 owns a 5770 in performance. It is between a 5850 and a 5870 in performance.

Tell them you will accept no less than a 5850 or you want a monetary refund.

They can't tell you to 'take it or leave it' they physically have to give you a like for like replacement by law.

Hell, a second hand 4870X2 is worth more than a new 5770.

A second hand 4870X2 is worth about £170, which is about the same price as a new 5830.

Accept no lower than a 5830 money wise, or 5850 performance wise.

Seriously, they can't deny you due to the fact that you have covered both price and performance bases. They are ripping you off by giving you a 5770.

If they still won't budge, contact trading standards because you have a very good case.
