Should I buy Accelero Xtreme 5970?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I was thinking of buying Artic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5970 but I was hoping you could help me with my questions:

1. Does it cool properly the VRM of the HD5970? I heard some problems about same cooler brand with 4870x2.

2. Is it easy to remove the stock cooler from HD5970?

3. Is it easy to install the accelero xtreme 5970?

4. Do you recommend me to get it? (Main reason is the rattle noise from the stock fan, it pisses me off).

Thank you,
Kevin.

Arctic cooling has some of the best coolers, it should cool the VRM's and the Sapphire HD 5990 4GB uses the same cooler.

It should be, jsut remove the screws to the heatsync and backplate, than give it some slow sideways twists while slowly pulling it off.

Probably just as easy as installing the stock cooler, just install the thermal pads and paste, put on the cooler and than install the screws.

I'd do it, that thing would overclock like a BEAST!

Thank you for answering.

Only thing that takes me back is killing the DVI ports like some users have reported on Hardforum :/

Theres no difference in wattage, what it means is that it can cool off 300w of power, meaning more overclocking ability because overclocking needs more power and this can cool off that extra heat.

If it's anywhere near their 4870x2 flavor, it is dead silent. I have no idea how or why Arctic cooling would produce something loud, they aim for silence / low noise, and succeed imo

Also, I was on the fence of deciding whether or not to get the 4870x2 AC Xtreme cooler... it was easily one of my best decisions for my pc ever. The temps drop off immensely, and I never break 40% fan speed. Yes, 40%, its awesome.

I'll base your 5970 questions on my experience with my 4870x2... I know it may not be what youre looking for, but I'll throw it up here just in case...

The stock heatsink *should* be easy. Be sure to run the card for a few minutes before removing the heatsink so everything comes off more easily, less of a chance to forcibly damage anything.

The Accelero will be more difficult to install than the sock heatsink, since it *may* be in pieces (I know the 4870x2 flavor had 2-4 parts <Already forgot! >). However, the instructions are well detailed and you really should not have a problem at all. Be extremely careful where you put what heat pads. Almost fudged up my installation by putting the wrong heat pad where it didn't belong.

Also, my VRM's are cooled perfectly fine... Yes I installed it pretty slowly (took me about 30 minutes), but I checked each and every screw, heat pad location etc to ensure I got it installed properly.

Lastly... I;d look into why it's killing DVI ports as seen on [H]. It might simply be a poor installation thats nerfing these ports up. As long as you are careful in installing you will be fine. Spend more time doing it properly and you will not have any issues. (Unless it is a design flaw on AC's part, in which case you should wait for the next revision or something)

As if you couldn't gather it already, I do recommend this cooler, my 4870x2 loves it, and I'm sure your 5970 will too
