My 8800GTX cheep "mod" cooling

Thread Starter
My old 8800GTX used to be at 85C idle, and died at load so instead of buying a new card\
ew cooling, I've went the cheap way.

I got some AS 5, so I've replaced the old thermal paste
Before:

I've removed the plastic "shroud "

Cleaned this horror up, and put a 90MM fan I had

Results: ain't bad ain't good.
Idle: 85C, gaming: 102C

The problem:since the removal of the shroud, the fan move's the air everywhere, not only to the heatsink.

Solution: Intel's stock IHS fan.

Results: better
60C-63C idle, 95C gaming
Ambient: 29C

Thoughts? suggestions?

That sucker is really hot, I'm clocked on the stock HSF @ 666/1525/2160 and my idle is 50c and max load 60c-62c. You sure you didn't use too much thermal paste?

I'm going to restate the obvious, but it's still hotter then it should be (idle and load)

I put AS5 on one, and never went above 73C on load (idle in the 40's)

Double check that the memory modules are in fact seating against the HSF, and check you didn't apply too much on the GPU.

You might be better off attaching that intel HSF to the backside of the GPU, while leaving the stock fan where it was, and leaving the ghetto fan on as well. I've heard that helps a lot.

Dude sounds like a professional needs to work on cleaning your card and etc. Its still WAY to dirty. You should have used some thing better like OCZ freeze.

Interested in selling her?

build your own shroud using thin cardboard or plastic, or mod the old shroud...
