Lapping a CPU?

When talking about overclocking CPUs what does it mean when I have a Lapped cpu.... Am I missing something here???

You use a special grit of sandpaper to make your heatspreader flat. Flatter equals better temps

Lapping is where you sand off the zinc covering on your CPU to expose the copper below it, this also smooths out the surface to give better contact with the heatsink, and if you lap it a lot it thins the layer of metal between the die which houses the cpu and the heatsink. Overall it increases the amount of heat that can flow from the CPU to the heatsink, resulting in a more efficient system and lower temps.

Does that really help alot with the temps? hmm I'm I don't feel like sanpapering my cpu for an extra 0.5 C off....

You sand off the nickel plating and make it perfectly flat so that it is copper and flat for the best temps possible. It takes about 2-4 C off of the temps.

It helped me quite a bit, I lapped my CPU IHS and my Big Typhoon, those 2 things alone got me from a 3.67GHz stable overclock to a 3.86GHz stable overclock. It is really easy to do as well, and safer than removing your IHS.

I have lapped a few Prescotts for testing purposes and have found that after a week of 12 hours on and 12 hours off "curing" there was usually around a 1 - 2C difference. It was not enough to justify the work for me and I do not lap for that reason.

It was very popular in the hotter running CPUs that had no IHS. The lapping removed the coating from the CPU core which was for sealing it but also had insulative properties.
