is the bios update necessary?

yes/no... depends...

I tend to not upgrade my BIOS unless I encounter a problem. Usually won't hurt... but if your running a 100% stable overclock and not having issues it usually doesn't pay to go playing around with a new BIOS unless your really looking to squeeze more out of it and the newer BIOS has good feedback

OP, the nice thing about the UD7 is that it has a dual bios meaning there are 2 bios chips. So if you flash the bios and brick it, the board will boot off the second bios chip. Then you have the option to copy the good bios accross to the bad one. So don't worry about a bios update going wrong.

And gigabyte lets you flash a bios from within the bios by pressing F9 from the bios menu. All you need is a FAT formatted USB drive with the bios file on it to do this.
